Summary: Ohno is a vampire, and one day meets Nino - the human boy whose every little detail enchants Ohno. That day, after a sampling of the boy’s blood(which is literally the most delicious thing Ohno’s ever tasted) and a brief session of love making, Ohno forces himself to put a distance between himself and Nino in fear that the whole thing was leading to something that shouldn’t be. However, Nino is able to find Ohno a few months later, moody and with a baby bump in his stomach.…
NOTE/WARNING: PREGNANT!NINO, VAMPIRE!OHNO, VAMPIRE!JUN, VAMPIRE!SHO, WEREWOLF!AIBA. AND THERE IS ONE VERY, VERY ANGSTY PART AND ALSO A FEW EMBARRASSINGLY FLUFFY PARTS - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Oh, and crack

“It all happened in the middle of the night, or morning,” Ohno says, pausing to take a big gulp of beer. He is a vampire, and so is his friend Jun - they’d known each other for centuries, and understand an even longer road ahead together since vampires were immortal.

Jun stares on patiently, giving Ohno plenty of time to pause and try to come up with the right words. It wasn’t like Ohno to ever worry, to want to talk - this was going to be good and Jun knew it.

“I met him at a convenience store. We were both there to buy some instant ramen, and we were the only ones there since… well, it was like three in the morning. He initiated the conversation, something light about why I’d be out at that time, why he was out then - something about games,” Ohno jumbles on, staring ahead intently at nothing, fingers playing with each other just because they have to do something.

“His name,” Jun asks.

“Ninomiya Kazunari. Or Nino. He’s not that tall - either taller than me or as tall - and has really… small, sharp bones. Really pale, pretty, with small hands. He’s clever, sort of mousy, and really beautiful-“

“Oh god,” Jun grumbles, squeezing his eyes shut and trying to convince himself that this wasn’t what it was starting to sound like.

“So we talked a little, then said goodbye. Outside, I was headed one way, he was headed another, except… at some point, I just had to stop, turn around and find him again.”

“Stupid,” Jun grumbles disappointedly into his hands, to which Ohno winces.

“Jun… I don’t even know why, I’d never been so hungry for someone, ever. It was strange…”

Nino doesn’t show too much shock or fear when he is grabbed and pulled into a dark alley, pushed onto a brick wall by strong arms. He actually smiles when his caramel eyes meet Ohno’s.

“Nice to see you again,” Nino says, unshaken. Ohno stares on, hunger growing, shining dangerously in his dark eyes.

“I don’t want this to hurt too much, so try not to move,” Ohno warns flatly. When Nino raises a brow, he flashes his fangs. To this, Nino surprises Ohno by laughing in response.

“You’re kidding,” Nino says in disbelief, staring at the vampire in wonder. “Aren’t you a little too… cute, to be a vampire?”

Ohno gives a small hiss before he quickly moves to sink his fangs into the soft skin of Nino’s neck. The younger shivers against Ohno, who firmly keeps him in place. Blood flows freely from the twin wounds, and Ohno tries to keep calm after the shock that it’s the best thing he’s ever tasted in his long, long lifetime.

The taste drives him crazy, and when he has to stop for the safety of Nino, he fights a deep craving for more.

“You’re done now?” Nino asks, and he says it smugly, challengingly.

And then, Ohno sees it - Nino, bleeding from where Ohno had marked him on the right side of his neck, staining the collar of his white shirt, which hides a soft, slender figure, and the pretty eyes, thin lips quirked up in an inviting smile, button-like nose…

“I just… lost it,” Ohno sighs, taking another gulp of beer.

“This isn’t like you at all, you know,” Jun speaks defeatedly. “Listen, Ohno, this is bad. Go, leave, far away from here, where you won’t see him and he won’t see you. Whatever you do, do not return until you’ve completely forgotten…”

Ohno closes his eyes sadly, otherwise nodding.

The kiss was deep and heated from the beginning, tongues battling, hands tangling in hair to pull closer.

“This is rape, you know,” Nino says, smiling at Ohno playfully, completely obliging to Ohno’s firm grip on him against the cool brick wall.

Ohno rolls his eyes, doesn’t think about it much - after all, this Nino is begging for more when Ohno’s thrusting into him, the small hands only pulling the other closer. Just around when Ohno comes, he bites into Nino’s neck for a second taste, lightly this time - however, this time around, the pale boy faints from the loss of blood.

“I shouldn’t have just left him there, in the alley,” Ohno mourns. “I should’ve at least taken him to a safer place, somewhere with a bed, plus maybe a-“

“No, you did the right thing,” Jun cuts in sharply. “Snap out of it, Ohno, he’s a mortal and you’re an immortal. You two aren’t meant to be at all. Forget him, not only for yourself but for him, too.”

Ohno eyes his empty glass thoughtfully. His heart sinks, but he knows that his friend is right - if Ohno were to let himself get close to Nino, to care for him, that would mean he would also have to watch him someday wilt down to his death.

It doesn’t take a week until Ohno’s moved into a small apartment on the other side of the country.

It’s a quiet town, near the ocean.

He falls into a routine of spending his nights fishing on a small boat, going home just as the first rays of the sun would escape the horizon - vampires were weakened by sunlight, therefore they preferred to spend time indoors during the day. Shielded from sunlight inside his small apartment, Ohno spends a lot of time sketching things and sleeping. He sometimes drinks alcohol, but has been reluctant to ever since the time he got really drunk and woke up in the middle of the night next to an eerily accurate sketch of Nino’s face.

For food, he had become drawn to having sashimi on rice - in this town, planted right next to the ocean, the sashimi were fresh and cheap, which was a sick combination. The dish was simple too, something Ohno appreciated a lot. He hadn’t had blood since his run-in with Nino - despite the stereotypes, vampires didn’t need blood to survive, although it was delicious and gave them strength that no other food could. Ohno was a vampire who found great awkwardness and guilt in sucking blood, and almost never did it with the exception of situations like the one he experienced with Nino. He had settled long, long before to survive on food.

For three or four months, his life is calm and slow, the established rhythm stable.

But one day, all falls apart - it starts with heavy banging at Ohno’s front door.

Ohno opens his eyes tiredly, waking from a foggy dream; it was still day, sky clear and sunlight strong.

Aibachan? He thinks, remembering his werewolf friend whom he hadn’t seen for years. He shakes his head slowly when he remembers that he hadn’t yet told this friend about his new home. Or Jun…

The banging gets harder and harder, at some point becoming really dangerous for the door. Ohno groans, standing and wandering sleepily towards the unpleasant sound.

When Ohno opens the door, he thinks he is seeing wrong because Ninomiya Kazunari is standing in front of him, expression blank.

“Nino,” Ohno mumbles stupidly, blinking when he sees the blankness in Nino’s expression slowly develop into something more angry and dangerous.

“Move, it’s cold out here,” Nino grumbles, pushing past Ohno forcefully and escaping into the living room to leave Ohno wondering what to do with the shock.

Ohno stumbles into the living room after Nino, standing at the entrance and furrowing his brows at the younger who looks around, taking in the place.

“Cleaner than I expected,” Nino comments plainly. He then moves to staring at Ohno expectantly, as if Ohno was supposed to be saying or doing something - to this, Ohno shuffles uncomfortably.

“How’d you find me,” Ohno jumbles out, pointing an accusing finger.

Nino scoffs. “You left me in that alley,” he responds strongly.

Ohno gets smaller and smaller. “I didn’t mean to - I had to. It’s a long story, but.. I’m sorry, I really am-“

“You can explain later,” Nino cuts in, suddenly looking really tired. Ohno casts a worried look, but that turns into a look of fear when Nino suddenly closes the distance between them-

Nino grabs Ohno’s wrist firmly, and then roughly guides the hand to rest on his belly.

Ohno looks at the younger questioningly, noting the small mound that had formed on his stomach. Nino stares low and away in some kind of embarrassment, nervousness and shame.

“Yours,” Nino speaks, closing his eyes.

When it all registers, Ohno forgets how to breathe. Softly, Nino lets go of Ohno’s wrist, but that doesn’t keep the vampire from leaving his hand flat against the soft warmth of Nino’s belly.

“The first few months were hell, you know,” Nino starts, voice wavering and suddenly fragile. “Nausea, vomiting, mood swings. Crazy appetite, too. The worst part was that I was all alone - just where the hell were you? You’re just as responsible, you know,” he barks, tears streaming down his face.

Ohno closes the distance to embrace Nino, who immediately wets Ohno’s left shoulder with tears.

“I’m so sorry,” Ohno whispers. When voices cry out in his head - What are you doing? He’s a mortal! Have you forgotten what Jun said? - he shuts them all out, instead thinking about the small life inside of Nino and how sorry he was for leaving Nino alone and pregnant for months.

“I hate crying,” Nino sighs once he’s calmed down a bit. Ohno rubs his back gently, and the human sniffles, closing his eyes in comfort.

“All my fault,” Ohno says softly, to which Nino sarcastically laughs a ‘no shit.’

For a while, they stay there, swaying just a bit. At some point, though, the flowing silence is broken with an ‘I’m tired’ by Nino - Ohno then leads Nino to his small bedroom, arm protectively wrapped around the human’s bony shoulders just because.

When Nino tiredly climbs into Ohno’s bed, he tugs at Ohno’s hand.

“Stay,” he murmurs, eyes sleepy and half-lidded.

And Ohno just has to oblige. He slips under the covers, where Nino shuffles close, smiling shyly when the older slings an arm around his middle.

Nino falls asleep quickly - he sleeps like he hadn’t for a long time, and Ohno feels bad, especially when the younger pulls him closer every time he moved.

For hours, Ohno stays awake, just thinking. He thinks about the small place in his heart that screams about how wrong this was, about how this was all starting to lead to something that shouldn’t be-

Ohno was a vampire; he was nocturnal; he defied age; nothing about him was normal. On the other hand, Nino was human; he was diurnal; he was bound to wilt away and die someday; he was one with a firm place in society, with the opportunity to lead a normal, happy life.

And then there was the baby.

Thinking about the child makes Ohno’s heart dance and melt away into something weird. Inside this person in his arms grows a life they made together - it’s the most intimate connection.

The baby was going to be a human - becoming a vampire wasn’t a genetic thing, so even a child born between two vampires were bound to be born human. For one to be a vampire, they had to be put through a ritual conducted by other vampires; Ohno had been turned into a vampire when he was young and dying from a disease, not knowing the weight of eternity, just wanting to survive.

If Ohno were to say he didn’t love Nino and the small life in his belly, he would be completely bullshitting. But…

Should I stay, or should I go? Would Nino and the baby have a better life with or without me? Would I have a better life staying with the two?

Small fingers trace a side of Ohno’s face, awakening the vampire from his thoughts. In the darkness, Ohno can barely see the way Nino’s smile resembles something like relief, growing when Ohno reaches out to gently rub the grown(and still growing) belly. The trust in the younger’s eyes confuses Ohno - he doesn’t understand where it comes from, but it’s there, sure and unwavering.

“Live with me,” Ohno whispers.

Nino hides away his face into a pillow, embarrassed, but otherwise nods softly.

Living with another person, especially a pregnant one, was something that sounded exhausting and stressful. But this Nino was different - he and Ohno fit together accurately and comfortably. Nino wasn’t very much demanding, and the only things he ever really asked for was for Ohno to get something for him or simply stay next to him. Their time together was so pleasant and laid back that it confused Ohno sometimes.

The only problem that seemed to exist between them was that their relationship was unclear. Nino would snuggle up to Ohno or hold his hand, but never once did he kiss the older since moving in with him. And, because Nino didn’t kiss Ohno, Ohno didn’t kiss Nino either. Between them was never any ‘I love you’s or anything that tied to romance.

The day Ohno finally draws the line begins with the first time he cooks for Nino-

“I’m making breakfast today,” Ohno announces when the two wake together, close enough to feel each other’s breaths. Nino raises a brow - the younger had always done the cooking, and a lot of other chores. Nino always volunteered to because he had his strict way of doing things, and would rather do things himself than have it be done some other way. He also maybe liked the useful, wifely feeling of doing the chores for Ohno, but refused to admit that even to himself.

Nino giggles, sleepy eyes chasing the vampire who shuffles out of bed and gives a determined stretch. “Didn’t know you could cook.”

“I can,” Ohno says, turning and rearranging the blankets before softly saying, “Sleep a little longer, I’ll wake you when it’s ready.”

“Make it good, okay.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” Ohno grins, lightly tracing the baby bump covered with pajama top and blankets. Nino’s eyes close, searching for a dream again.

Ohno’s not done making the chahan yet, but Nino comes to sit at the kitchen table and quietly observe anyway.

When Ohno does finish, he finds that Nino is unusually quiet, looking down blankly at the well-polished surface of the table.

“Feeling okay?” Ohno asks, worried, setting down the plate of chahan in front of Nino.

“Just… thinking,” Nino murmurs.

“What’s on your mind?”

Nino scratches his head, then looks up, nervously meeting the older’s worried eyes.

“I’ve been wondering - Just what are we?” When Ohno furrows his brows, Nino continues uncomfortably: “I mean, are we friends? Lovers? Or just two people who had no choice because there’s a kid, and both are responsible? …Not that I’m - it’s all up to what you think.”

Ohno doesn’t know. He doesn’t have a clue - breakfast goes by quietly.

That day, after long hours of sitting and thinking, Ohno goes out. Despite the sunlight that drains his energy strongly, Ohno finds the best store, and then purchases the perfect paired silver ring.

When the vampire comes home, worn down for being in the sun, he goes straight to Nino, who is putting up freshly washed clothes to air dry.

“Welcome home,” Nino says lightly and without being much affected, busy straightening out one of Ohno’s old shirts. He looks up curiously, though, when Ohno holds out a small paper bag.

Nino reaches out, about to receive the gift, but then Ohno pulls it away, jumbling out a hurried “Wait, this isn’t how to do it.”

“Do what,” Nino asks, confused by the vampire’s behavior. “What’s going on, Ohno san?”

“Hold on a minute,” Ohno says, before rushing off to the bedroom, closing the door behind him.

By the time Ohno re-emerges from the bedroom, coats in hand, Nino’s ditched the laundry, now standing with his arms crossed over his chest and staring expectantly.

“Can you come with me? Outside?” Ohno asks, to which Nino looks even more confused.

“Um… Sure, just hold on a minute, let me hang up all the clothes first.”

By the time they’re outside, the sky is orange.

It’s winter, but where they live it isn’t cold enough for snow. It’s still cold, though, and Ohno takes off his coat to wrap it around Nino. Nino accepts the kindness without any protest - this carefreeness was one of the factors that made things work out so well between them.

“Where are we going,” Nino asks, maybe a little annoyed from the lack of explanation.

Ohno doesn’t answer, and just keeps walking, knowing that Nino would follow anyway.

When they finally stop, they’re at a park. It’s prettier during the summer when flowers bloom, but Ohno thinks it should still work.

“Can I sit down?” Nino asks, looking to a nearby bench. “He’s getting pretty heavy.”

“He?” Ohno asks, blinking.

To this, Nino smiles sheepishly, starting to take slow steps towards the bench. “I forgot to tell you - at the checkup a few days ago, I found out that it’s a boy.”

“Oh.” Ohno can’t find any words nor can he fight the smile from appearing. He joins Nino at the bench, then ruffles his hair.

“I want to teach him how to play baseball,” Nino says dreamily, scooting closer until the two are seated arm-to-arm, leg-to-leg.

“I hope he has your nose,” Ohno comments, and Nino raises a brow. “I love your nose,” he adds as if that’d explain everything - Nino laughs, looking away shyly.

“Then I hope he has your eyes,” Nino says, a playful smile on his face. “I love your eyes.”

“I hope he looks a lot like you,” Ohno challenges, truth shining in his eyes and making Nino turn red. “I love you.”

Nino tries a laugh, searching for any sign of joke, but then goes still when he can’t find any.

“I think I want us to be family,” Ohno speaks, suddenly really nervous when fumbling for the stylish case with the ring. He knew little of proposals, so he is not sure if he’s doing it right when he takes Nino’s hand and places the case inside.

Nino stares at the present, something unreadable shining in his eyes.

“If you’re okay with it… Kazunari. Let’s get married?”

Ohno’s never been married, so he doesn’t know how this was going to turn out. However, throughout his long life, he had learned that it bound two people together, assuring a shared path.

Things people do or say in their sleep are pure and honest - Nino, in his sleep, tugs Ohno closer, whines when the older tries to move away even a bit. Stay by my side is the unsaid message Nino often gives - it’s a hidden, weak side of Nino. He is immeasurably unconfident when it comes to trusting people to love him.

Ohno wants to protect this person, who is so happy just being by his side.

‘Just what are we?’ Nino had asked once, looking so small and scared.

And this was Ohno’s answer.

After opening the case, Nino stares at the silver ring for a bit wordlessly. Just around when Ohno starts to doubt, Nino takes the ring and slips it onto his left ring finger with a sniffle.

Nino places a kiss on Ohno’s cheek before leaning his head on the vampire’s shoulder and murmuring: “Make me happy, okay?”

For a while since the marriage(it’s not on paper, but it’s not like either really cared much for some signs on paper anyway), things are so perfect between the two that it almost feels sinful. The small, uncertain hesitance that had existed before dissipated away into nothing, and the air between the two was more comfortable and laid back than what should be allowed- it was almost creepy how the two fit together so well, and the cliché about ‘fitting together like puzzle pieces’ seemed like a weak understatement for the pair.

It’s one of their quiet, rested moments with Nino fiddling with his DS and Ohno sketching something when there is knocking at the front door.

“Ohno? Are you home?” Jun’s voice calls from outside.

Nino furrows his brows, looking at Ohno expectantly, while Ohno mutters a quiet curse.

“Stay quiet,” Ohno whispers to Nino, who looks even more disoriented in response. “I’ll explain everything when he leaves.”

“Better be good,” Nino grumbles, resuming play on his now muted DS.

A minute passes, and the knocking stops, followed by leaving footsteps.

“I’ll go check,” Ohno says softly, leaving behind a curious and pouting Nino to make sure the fellow vampire had indeed left.

Standing before the front door, Ohno sighs in relief when he doesn’t sense Jun’s presence. However, a shiver runs through him when he hears the sound of a window sliding open.

“You’re really bad at this,” Jun says smugly, slipping inside the living room from the window there. “You underestimate me - I could easily sense you being here.”

“Jun… now’s not a good time,” Ohno stutters, heart doing a nervous flip when he hears faint shuffling from the bedroom.

Jun knew nothing about Ohno seeing Nino again since that one night, and furthermore did not know about the pregnancy, living together nor marrying. Ohno had made sure he didn’t know because there was no way in hell Jun was going to accept any of it.

“What, are you sick or something?” Jun asks lightly, obviously not getting Ohno’s panic. “What’s up? Come on, you can talk to me - we’ve known each other for centuries, for god’s sakes.”

“Really, Jun, now’s not a good time,” Ohno nervously says.

Jun’s about to joke something again, but then stops, freezes up in realization - it’s too late.

“Someone else is here,” Jun says, looking around suspiciously until his eyes land on the closed slide-door to the bedroom. He stares at the door for a few seconds before turning to Ohno, eyes lit up with realization.

“… I can explain.”

“Move,” Jun speaks flatly, taking hurried strides towards the door to the bedroom, pushing past Ohno when he got in the way.

When the door slides and opens with a slam, Nino jumps a little in surprise but then quickly recovers to glaring at Jun with some sort of attitude.

“A human,” Jun says lowly.

“And who the hell are you?” Nino barks back dangerously.

Ohno reaches out and grabs Jun’s arm, tugging. “Let me explain everything, okay? Just come with me, out to the balcony.”

Jun silently glares at Nino for a few more moments before roughly shoving out of Ohno’s grip, heavily stepping towards the said balcony with a huff. Ohno shoots Nino an apologetic glance before following his friend outside.

Clearly, Jun is beyond displeased. But it’s not out of meanness - he is worried, and Ohno understands that. Leaning out the rails, Jun, in Ohno’s eyes, is nothing but a kind, worried friend.

“Nino found me a few months ago,” Ohno starts carefully, slowly stepping into the space next to Jun. “He… was pregnant. From the day we met - I was the father.”

“I saw,” Jun sighs defeatedly.

“I asked him to move in with me. It was the right thing to do, I wasn’t going to let him go through this all by himself when I’m probably more responsible than he is.”

“Is that a ring?” Jun asks flatly, eyeing the silver ring on Ohno’s left ring finger, the one that matches Nino’s.

“We… I asked for him to marry me, and he said yes, so…” Ohno shuffles uncomfortably, shrinking under Jun’s judging gaze. “It’s not official, like it’s not on legal paper, since I’m a vampire and I’m not really a legal being, but… We’re happy, Jun. We really are.”

“You’re stupid!” Jun raises his voice, and Ohno flinches. “You’ve lived just as long as I have - you know that this is going to turn bad sooner or later. Vampires are not meant to be with humans. How do you think the kid would feel, growing up with a father who wasn’t a human being, who turned weak under the sun and was bound to live long after their own death? And what about this Ninomiya, how would he feel spending his years with someone who didn’t have to worry about time, who held such a different fate?
And the day both Ninomiya and the kid are no longer alive - how would you feel? Ohno… leave this place and this human, before it’s too late! Ninomiya can take care of himself!”

Ohno stares ahead, suddenly really lost.

“I know you love him. But you shouldn’t - it’s too dangerous.”

“… Just give us some time. Let us be, just until the baby is born - I don’t want Nino to worry until then.”

“It’s too late,” Jun sighs. “He’s been listening.”

Ohno scratches his head, troubled. “Can you go now? Please? I’ll talk to him.”

After a second or two and a final sigh from Jun, Ohno is left alone in the small balcony. For a few minutes, Ohno just stands there, leaning out the rails and just thinking. Only for a few minutes, though, because Nino’s still waiting in the bedroom, feeling as conflicted as Ohno.

“You heard?” Ohno asks gently, peering into the bedroom where Nino now sits off to the side, staring ahead at nothing, DS turned off and discarded next to him.

The younger nods slowly, closing his eyes. Heaving a heavy sigh, Ohno walks over to the other, sits next to him really close and lets him lean his weight onto him.

“I’m sorry,” Nino mumbles.

“Don’t,” Ohno responds, arm around Nino squeezing. He runs his free hand over Nino’s belly - it’s grown considerably since the day Nino first showed up in this apartment.

Nino bites his lower lip, fighting the tears.

“I’m so happy about this, you know,” Ohno says cheerfully, observing the baby bump with warmth in his expression. “There’s nothing I regret.”

Nino jumps then. Ohno raises a brow, searching for his eyes. And, eventually, he, too, jumps as he finds a man peering into the room.

“Leader,” the man smiles.

“Aibachan,” Ohno blinks surprised. It’s a pleasant surprise, and he finds himself smiling soon enough.

Aiba is a werewolf he met in the woods one night a few decades back - ever since Ohno saved him from the animal trap, Aiba’s nicknamed him ‘Leader’ out of some kind of respect.

The werewolf had followed Jun to the apartment. Unlike the Jun, though, he supports Ohno and Nino-

“You guys are happy, right? Then I think it’s okay. If there are future worries, you can face it when the time comes.”

Nino listens to the werewolf’s words with lit-up eyes, and it’s not too long before they connect and are laughing together.

After a bit of begging, Aiba is allowed to feel the mound on Nino’s belly. He is excited like a child at the zoo, especially when he claims that there was kicking.

“You’re kidding,” Nino says, eyes glinting in wonder as he puts a hand over his belly next to Aiba’s. Ohno is quick to join, fitting his hand next to the other two.

For a bit, silence envelops the room - the three concentrate hard for any sign of the small life inside of Nino.

Something moves. Nino and Ohno immediately look at each other, excited smiles alike.

“See? See?” Aiba squeals, literally smiling more brightly than the sun. “I get to be the godfather, right? …Please?”

Nino laughs. Ohno wipes a happy tear from the younger’s face. “If Ohno san’s okay with it.”

After Aiba makes curry for the three, they all eat while jokingly watching some horror show(Nino likes to tease Aiba, Ohno observes. It’s funny to watch the two joke, he also observes) until Aiba has to leave, reasoning that a full moon was on its way and that he’ll turn into a wolf any second.

Life is stable for a while - Nino sometimes woke in the middle of the night from a bad dream that was born from future worries, but Ohno’s grown used to cheering up and Nino’s grown used to being cheered up.

Aiba came over once in a while, and his friendship with Nino grew with each visit, always unwavering.

Inside of the small apartment, things like cradles and baby blankets start to pile up, and Ohno often finds himself talking to Nino about moving into a bigger, nicer place.

For a while, things are nice.

One night, though, Ohno is awakened by a shaky and sweating Nino. Immediately, Ohno sits up and moves closer to the younger, casting a worried look.

“… it hurts,” Nino says breathlessly, eyes half-lidded, suffering.

The baby’s not supposed to be due for a while yet - this didn’t make sense.

“Hospital,” Ohno mumbles quickly. He gently lifts Nino up into his arms, and he whispers reassuring words into the younger’s ear, to which Nino bunches up and squeezes the front of Ohno’s shirt.

It all happens so fast.

At the hospital, Nino is rushed into the last room of the hallway. Once inside the room, a girl does an ultrasound - she is silent the entire time, and all Ohno can hear for a while is the sound of Nino panting and sometimes twitching in pain.

When the nurse finally grasps what was happening, she leads Ohno out into the hallway to talk.

She apologizes first, and then takes over a full minute to inform Ohno that the baby didn’t have a heartbeat.

“He’s dead?” Ohno asks feebly, his own words making him flinch. When he finally starts to understand, the world stops spinning.

The nurse answers Ohno with a slow, careful nod and a few more unnecessary apologies. She then tells Ohno that he needed to “be strong because Nino had to now deliver the stillborn, and do so as calmly as possible for his own safety.”

“What’d she say,” Nino asks weakly when Ohno returns to the room, a small hand on his forehead unsuccessfully fighting a headache. “What’s happening, Ohno san…”

Ohno’s steps are heavy when he wordlessly walks to Nino’s side, and his arms are shaking when they hug Nino’s upper half into his chest. How am I supposed to sound reassuring now, Ohno wonders.

“Ohno san…?”

“She said there wasn’t a heartbeat,” Ohno chokes out through a tight throat.

In his arms, he feels the younger completely freeze up, then start to shake, harder and harder.

“No,” Nino gasps out, suddenly pushing at Ohno’s chest but not quite managing to escape the vampire’s embrace. “…no, no,” he repeats, trying to shove Ohno away, banging at his chest but to no avail.

“Nino… he’s gone-“

“He’s not gone,” Nino cries. Ohno feels tears staining his shirt, and hugs tighter.

“We have to move on. You’re in danger now - you have to deliver this baby safely,” Ohno says desperately. “Please, Kazunari… I need you.” Nino’s retaliations get weaker and weaker, and soon, he is helplessly weeping.

After a while in the labor room, Nino delivers a baby boy. The baby, wrapped in a soft, white blanket, is beautiful and perfect - Nino cradles him in his arms and quietly stares for a while. His eyes are almost as lifeless as his son’s.

Ohno takes some time to build enough courage to reach out, gently stroke the baby’s soft, soft head. And then, he wonders why the baby is cold. A baby shouldn’t feel cold.

Until that very moment, Ohno didn’t know that grief could hurt so badly. He didn’t know that feelings alone could make him choke, tremble and go completely numb - he is sure that, if he weren’t immortal, his heart would’ve long stopped beating from this unseen scar.

For a while, all Ohno knows is his path out the labor room, down the long halls of the hospital, down the quiet roads to the ocean and onto the small boat he hadn’t rented out for a while.

And when the boat is floating in the waters, far from land, Ohno sits down and cries.

He hadn’t cried for centuries - over such a long time, he had forgotten how. So he cries clumsily, at times letting out painful wails, at times crying in small shudders, at times stopping to blankly stare at the sky.

It’s the third time he sees the last star disappear, signaling the beginning of the third day, when Ohno decides it’s best to go back. He can’t avoid everything forever - there is someone out there feeling the same pain, and Ohno knows that person will probably not move on unless he took the first step.

When Ohno steps onto land again, he finds Jun waiting.

“Sorry,” Jun says before anything else.

Ohno understands. He advances to his friend smoothly, then hugs him close so that they both understand.

“I’m okay,” Ohno murmurs. So Jun lets him go with a kind smile.

They part, and Ohno takes the quickest route home. By the time Ohno is at the front door, it’s already late morning.

The first thing Ohno finds when he steps inside the living room is Aiba passed out on the couch. With a deep sigh, Ohno walks across he room to promptly sit on the werewolf’s back - Aiba wakes with a small cough.

“Leader,” Aiba mumbles, eyes turning moist. “Where were you?”

“I… needed time,” Ohno says softly, looking away.

“He climbed into bed as soon as we brought him home. Hasn’t moved since - no talking, eating, drinking, moving. God, I… I even brought Sho, Leader.”

Sho Sakurai was a fellow vampire, and probably the smartest thing ever fucking made. He was not just intelligence: he was centuries upon centuries of it. Furthermore, he was breathtakingly handsome; he was the owner of a warm, warm heart; perfection itself bowed down to him and kissed his ass.

If Sho couldn’t talk Nino out of his deep, dark hole… Ohno begins to painfully understand the exhaustion in Aiba’s voice, eyes, everything.

“Go home, Aibachan, rest - I’ll take this from here, okay?”

Aiba leaves, and Ohno heaves the nth sigh. On tired legs, he walks over to the door to the bedroom, slides it open then squints, eyes searching in the darkness for a familiar figure. Within seconds, he is eyeing the lump in the mess of blankets on his bed.

Ohno opens the curtains - sunlight shines in, weakening Ohno to the point where he thinks he would fall over any second, but Ohno doesn’t really mind it because it was for Nino, and he didn’t fall over.

“Nino,” Ohno says playfully, sitting by his lover, trying to figure out where the head was.

Nino stays quiet.

“Wake up, Nino, it’s morning,” Ohno says, resting his hand over what felt like Nino’s back.

“I thought you weren’t coming back,” Nino finally says, voice weaker than Ohno’s ever heard.

Ohno slings an arm around the younger, pulling him closer in a half-hug. “Why would you think that?”

“There’s nothing to stay for,” comes the shaky voice.

The vampire frowns. He glances at his silver ring thoughtfully.

“We’re married, and I love you,” Ohno says plainly.

Nino doesn’t respond.

Ohno, resting his head on God-knows-what, whispers: “I love you so much, okay? I love you…”

Finally, Nino moves. Ohno gives the younger some space so that he can untangle himself from the blankets - when Nino’s eyes finally find Ohno’s, they show that he’s been crying a lot.

“C’mere,” Ohno murmurs tenderly, pulling the younger close and into a firm, warm embrace.

“Hurts,” Nino chokes out through tears, his grip on Ohno’s shirt desperate.

Ohno drops a small kiss on a bony shoulder.

“I loved him so much,” Nino continues on - he is breaking, and Ohno thinks he’ll just fall apart if he were to ever let go. “I feel like… I - it was my fault, he died because of me-“

“You know better,” Ohno cuts in, closing his eyes. “I loved him too, you know. Don’t say such things.” He rubs the younger’s back, and smiles softly when he feels him relaxing.

Nino moves away a bit to find Ohno’s eyes. He sighs when he does, then moves in again so that their foreheads and noses are touching.

“How did I find you,” Nino whispers, small hands meeting either of Ohno’s cheeks.

“I’m the lucky one,” Ohno whispers back, heart finally lightening when Nino laughs softly.

“Cheesy,” Nino says. “So embarrassing.”

Ohno’s heart swells, and he can’t help but to lean in and gently kiss Nino.

They kiss for a bit, slow and loving, and Ohno only pulls away when he feels tears.

“What’s wrong,” the older asks, wiping the tears from Nino’s face.

“Nothing - it’s stupid,” Nino responds, shaking his head.

Ohno sees through the younger’s forced smile - Nino realizes this, and heaves a sigh.

“Ohno san is eternal,” Nino mumbles sadly. “I can’t beat time. So it’s inevitable - someday I’ll die, and you’ll stay right here. We’ll have to say goodbye. Except… I know this is childish and selfish, but sometimes I find myself thinking… I don’t want to say goodbye. I don’t want to die if it means we’ll be separated into two different worlds - I’m scared, Ohno san. So, so scared…”

This is why Jun had tried so hard to keep the two apart. No matter how much love there was, it was still a fact that their roads were painfully different; that, in the end, immeasurable suffering awaited. In a sad, helpless kind of understanding, Ohno closes his eyes.

“… You told me, when you were explaining that our baby was going to be human, that you used to be human, too - you told me you were turned into a vampire.”

Ohno’s eyes open, then widen in realization. “No. God, Nino… you can’t.”

Ohno takes a deep breath, then starts: “Becoming a vampire… it’s lonely and sad. You see things rise up and then you also see it waste away into nothing. This world is full of things to love, and too many of those things are bound to disappear eventually. Memories will pile up and turn into a burden… it hurts, Nino. I love you - I can’t let you go through this.”

“I won’t be lonely,” Nino says, offering a small smile. “I’ll have you.”

To this, Ohno blinks. He stares at this human thoughtfully - Nino: beautiful, loving, trusting.

Right then, Ohno learns what it’s like to love someone so much that it was painful, tugging at his chest and making him want to dance, sing, shout, just do something.

Life eternally bound with Ninomiya Kazunari. Ohno thinks about it - having somebody to share his feelings, to talk to or simply just see every day, to hold close just to remind him that he wasn’t alone…

He would never be sad or lonely.

If I can be selfish this one time. Just this once…

“You’ll get sick of me,” Ohno says in defeat to both himself and determined caramel eyes.

“I’d never get sick of you,” Nino says, a happy smile breaking out on his face and almost completely erasing the guilt and uncertainty in Ohno.

“You won’t be able to go out in the sun much.” Ohno continues, not being able to hold back a small smile when Nino takes both of his hands firmly.

“Good,” Nino murmurs, kissing Ohno’s nose.

-------

When Ohno wakes, the first he does is stretch widely and give a giant yawn. He then sits for a bit, back bent forward sleepily and unyouthfully, before he looks around, taking in his surroundings.

He’s alone. It makes him a little too sad and lonely to keep sleeping so he slips out of bed, shivering when bare feet touch the cool wooden floor.

The day was just ending, introducing a dark, starry night. The living room is dim, its only source of light being the television. That’s enough for Ohno however, since vampires see well in the dark. He finds Nino quickly, seated on the couch, limbs folded flexibly.

“Good morning,” Nino mumbles, punching buttons on the controller to fight a giant frog on the screen. “Or night. Whatever. I always get this wrong.”

Ohno grins, walking over and plopping down next to Nino on the couch. “How do you feel?”

“I feel like I have a cavity,” Nino whines, focus split in half - one side complaining and hinting for Ohno to spoil him while the other side tries to keep his character on the screen alive.

Ohno gives an amused chuckle, but otherwise sympathetically strokes the younger’s head. “It’s the fangs growing in. It’ll take only a week or so - don’t worry.”

“Only a week,” Nino cries out in disbelief. “Ohno san, that’s like…” Nino stops, and Ohno jumps when the frog on the screen lets out a screech of defeat. Ohno has to remind himself to breathe again in recovery from the shock, but guesses it not bad because Nino’s now smiling, arms raised victoriously.

“Sorry,” Ohno finds himself mumbling.

Nino ditches his game completely, and the next thing Ohno knows Nino is straddling Ohno’s lap.

“We’ve been through this,” Nino softly says, pecking Ohno’s lips.

“I know, just…” Ohno sighs, closing his eyes.

Ever since the day they had the ritual with the help of Jun and Sho(it was only after over two months of convincing), the day Nino was turned into a vampire just like Ohno, Ohno’s been feeling an unwavering guilt tugging at his heart.

However, Nino was good at cheering Ohno up, convincing him to smile and forget. It’s sort of like how Ohno used to care for Nino when he was pregnant - Ohno often finds himself thinking about how their love was destined.

“Satopi,” Nino murmurs, shuffling on Ohno’s lap, making the older shiver. “My Satopi…”

Ohno thinks Nino’s doing it on purpose - he shuffles, shuffles and shuffles, and one move in particular is so sinful that Ohno can’t help but gasp: “Woah.”

“Woah,” Nino agrees playfully, kissing Ohno’s right cheek.

Ohno moves in to kiss Nino’s lips, but Nino shifts quick enough that the younger’s lips catch Ohno’s left cheek instead - Ohno pouts. “Mean,” he mumbles.

“Love you too,” Nino purrs, small hands squishing Ohno’s cheeks affectionately.

And then, Ohno forgets all the bad in the world.

Ohno knows that people(and vampires alike) are supposed to get tired of other people if they are together too much. However, every day, he feels like he learns to appreciate Nino more and only more - he wonders if Nino feels the same.

One night out drinking, Nino says the same sweet thing that’s been on Ohno’s mind for a while:

“I think I’ll never get enough of you,” Nino slurs, leaning messily onto Ohno’s side. “Like, every day, I find more and more reasons why I love you. I love you, Ohno san. Forever’s not enough.”

And Ohno thinks he wants Nino to never leave his side. Holding hands in every possible moment, being connected in some way always, hell, melt with him so that they become one inseparable thing, as long as they could be together.

There is so much time - they could really do anything. The thought overwhelms Ohno at times, making him wonder is happiness could be a cause of death. They could go to that abandoned island Nino had always talked about as if it were an impossible wish; they could go to Hawaii so that Ohno can try to convince Nino that the ocean was nice; they could go to Australia with Aiba(Sho would follow because everyone knew Aiba made him happy, and Jun would follow too because he secretly loved the group); they could maybe take a shot again at the future they had painted out when their baby was growing in Nino’s belly.

“What’s on your mind,” Nino murmurs, poking the older’s side - Ohno then realizes that the movie they had been watching had long ended and that he had missed the ending lost in his thoughts. It doesn’t bother him, though. The thoughts were nice.

Ohno shakes his head, and Nino shrugs, moving to fetch the remote and turn off the television before snuggling into Ohno on the couch.

“’m sleepy,” Nino reasons with a yawn.

“Then sleep,” Ohno murmurs, squeezing Nino’s hand.

Nino hums, closing his eyes.

For a while, Ohno stares at their joined hands, blurred by the darkness. He thinks he will never be able to let go, and he also thinks Nino would let him to that - and then, by the time he finally falls asleep, a soft smile is playing on his face, there to stay for a long, long while…
