Summary: Ohno Satoshi is born into a complicated world, and is faced with a lot at a young age; from abductions, torture, survival to watching a loved one slowly go down from an irreversable sickness.

The following night, when Ohno returns from his last job to the hospital room(it was starting to become something like home to him), he finds Jun with two other young men.

“Hello,” One of the two strangers greets, and Ohno bows slightly in response, confusion obvious in his expression.

“Hey, Ohno,” Jun starts sheepishly, scratching the back of his head, “They’re the people I told you about yesterday.”

“I thought I said no,” Ohno frowns, mildly annoyed but too tired from work to be really upset.

“But this is the only chance for Nino,” Jun reasons carefully, and Ohno covers his face with his hand and lets out a groan.

“Jun,” Ohno starts, but stops and sighs. “Excuse us,” he says to the two researchers, and then turns to Jun and asks: “Can I talk to you for a bit?”

--

Ohno pulls Jun out into the hallway, and wordlessly guides him to sit down at a bench nearby.

And then, the older tells Jun everything: from how they had escaped from that facility, to how they were tricked by Kubota and Saitou. Strangely, a weight comes off of Ohno when he spills all of his worries, fears and nightmares to Jun.

Of course, he doesn’t tell everything; especially not about his recent dreams of Nino and him. But he still tells enough that, after he’s done talking, Jun is speechless.

“Sorry,” Jun manages at some point. Ohno shakes his head, and offers a warm smile; after all, he really appreciates Jun. Sure, Jun was a bit pushy, but it was nothing but kindness that Jun was pushing to Ohno.

----

The researchers’ names are Aiba Masaki and Sakurai Sho. Ohno remembers just because they come to visit every day.

Aiba’s the happy one, loud and probably brighter than the sun. He talks a lot; to Jun, to Sho,  to Nino(who was fast asleep in his come), to Ohno or to himself.

Sho’s the polite and intelligent one. Socially, he’s a genius; he can read the atmosphere so well that the things he says never has to be corrected.

Of course, Jun and Ohno had told the two that they’re not going to accept the drug. But the two stay hanging around them anyway.

At first, Ohno and Jun had found it both annoying and rude. But then, the four naturally got along; they were soon all friends.

--

One night, it’s only Ohno and Sho in the hospital room.

“So you really want to test that drug on Nino, huh,” Ohno says at one point.

Sho keeps his gaze on said boy, who is sleeping and had been sleeping for a while now. “You know, at first it was all about testing out the drug,” Sho sighs. “But now, I could care less about the tests.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Now, it’s all about saving Nino,” Sho says. Ohno looks at him in question. “Because I know how much you love him, Ohno kun.”

Ohno closes his eyes, and tries to think. But his mind’s messed up now; he can’t think.

And then, the machine by Nino’s bed starts to beep.

---

The doctors say that Nino has only about three days to live.

Ohno just kind of nods when he gets the news; he doesn’t cry, or whine to some God he didn’t even believe in. It’s not that he’s ready to lose Nino. It’s just that he can’t bring himself to believe it; his brain knows fully, but his heart can’t keep up.

-----

At night, after his last job, Ohno sits down at a bench just outside the hospital.

He falls asleep there. It’s a deep slumber; he doesn’t have a dream, much to his disappointment. He feels a bit lonely when he wakes up, but that feeling goes away as soon as he sees who had joined him at the bench.

“At first I thought you were some homeless person,” Aiba says, giggling at his own thought. Ohno smiles a small, tired smile at him.

“Aibachan, Sho kun...”

“Why are you out here?” Sho asks, tone strangely caring like a mother's.

Ohno stops and thinks. But he can’t think. He scratches his head; his brain hurts.

“I don’t want to lose Nino," Ohno mindlessly says after a moment; it comes straight from his heart, and it not only reminds Sho and Aiba, but reminds Ohno himself, too.

Sho places a hand on Ohno’s shoulder, and the latter can’t help but feel comfort from that hand.

“Trust us for now, please?” Sho speaks. Ohno doesn’t respond, so he continues: “Ever since I overheard your conversation with Jun -don’t get me wrong, it was Aibachan that started eavesdropping-"

“Woah, Shochan, you were totally the one who-“

“That’s not the point,” Sho cuts in with a frown. Ohno blinks. “The point is, Ohno san, we really want to save him; that’s all there is to it. No catch.”

“We want to save you, too,” Aiba says with one of his bright smiles. Ohno blinks back a tear. “I don’t know who these guys were, or what they did; Kobuta, was it? And Satou? Whoever they were, we’re not like them. It’s kind of offensive, you know, to not trust us for that kind of reason.”

“I know that there are risks. But I trust this medication to work; if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here talking to you like this. So please, Ohno kun…”

Ohno stares into Sho’s eyes, and slowly starts to trust the young researcher, his friend.

“The doctors said that he has around three days; that’s around how long it takes for the drug to work. Tonight’s probably the last chance.”

“What do you say?” Aiba finishes.

Ohno looks at Aiba, and then at Sho. Strangely, these guys make Ohno feel stronger; they give him the confidence to do things he thought he could never do.

“Please save him,” Ohno finally answers, closing his eyes and fighting back some tears.

Sho leans in and wraps his arms around him, patting his back comfortingly. “Okay,” he whispers gently. And Ohno trusts him.

----

Ohno’s inside a forest, surrounded by giant trees. The trees seem to stretch far upward, and form giant umbrellas of leaves above the forest; there’s no sun, and it’s eerily dim.

He walks a bit until he sees a familiar figure, sitting on a tree stump faced away from him.

“Nino?” Ohno calls out hopefully; he doesn’t know where he is and is scared, and feels great relief to find the younger there.

He waits for a moment, but Nino doesn’t move. Ohno tries again: “Hey, Nino.”

Nino stays frozen on the tree stump; he doesn’t even seem to be breathing. Ohno cautiously takes a few steps towards him.

“… Nino?”

The younger is frozen there, just sitting cross-legged on the tree stump and staring straight ahead at nothing. He doesn’t even blink.

“You okay?” Ohno tries, hoping that this was some kind of joke Nino was playing. “… This isn’t funny, you know. Nino... you’re scaring me.”

Nino doesn’t move.

And then, Nino lifts; Ohno jumps a little in surprise.

The older opens his mouth, but nothing comes out; Nino, lifted in the air awkwardly, starts to fade; he starts to turn transparent, bit by bit.

“Nino,” Ohno gasps. He reaches out for the younger in panic, but his hand goes right through the fading figure.

Nino is slowly fading away into nothing, and Ohno starts to cry.

“Don’t go,” Ohno says tearfully. But Nino keeps fading away until, eventually, Ohno’s all alone.

After a moment, Ohno falls to his knees. He covers his face with his hands, and cries hard. Nino’s gone; he lost Nino.

He loses himself, too.

-

It’s the morning of the third day since Nino was given the drug, and Ohno wakes up to the sound of the machine next to Nino’s bed beeping.

And then, everything suddenly hits him; Nino’s going to leave him for good. The one Ohno loves more than anyone else in the world is leaving him forever.

“Stop,” Ohno cries. He rushes to Nino’s side, and immediately scoops the younger up into a big hug.

The world starts to fall to pieces around Ohno. And all he could do is wait, head resting on the younger’s shoulder and cherishing what might be the last warmth. He knows that he’s about to lose the most important thing to him in the world, and it scares the living shit out of him.

Slender arms move to wrap around Ohno.

“Satoshi,” Nino murmurs softly into Ohno’s ear.

-------

Nino sits on the hospital bed, and Ohno sits on a chair by the bed with a stupid grin on his face, holding Nino’s warm hand.

Ohno, Nino, Aiba, Sho and Jun are all gathered around, talking loudly and happily about stupid things; from Nino’s attempt at skating at a young age to Aiba’s crazy adventures across the country.

The five guys all connect in a way. And the strange part is that, there’s no process of coming together; they just slip into this connection as if they had all known each other for years.

--

It’s already past midnight when Ohno’s finally left alone with Nino. So much happened; the two don’t know what to say to each other at first. The atmosphere ends up making the two wordlessly share some light laughs.

“So,” Ohno says pointedly, squeezing Nino’s hand.

“I guess I’m going to be okay?” Nino offers with a smile, looking at their joined hands. “I just can’t believe it.”

Ohno’s now 17, Nino 14. They’re still young, with a long road ahead of themselves; the road had seemed lost for them for so long that, now that they could see it again, they aren’t sure what to make of it.

“We have time,” Ohno offers.

“Yeah. Might as well buy an island.”

~~\(^o^)/\(^-^)/~~~~~

Ohno stares out at the ocean, dazed. He wonders if this is a dream.

For countless years, they’ve wished for this. So much is coming together all at once that Ohno can’t help but just stare at everything, mouth hanging open stupidly.

In the distance, Nino’s looking for seashells along the shoreline. The small boat that the two used to get to their island is lying close by, and there’s a small house around where the sandy beach meets grass.

Everything’s perfect. Ohno closes his eyes and breathes in the fresh scent of the ocean, trees, and wishes that came true.

When Ohno snaps out of his daze, Nino’s holding his hand and smiling brightly at him.
