It's going to be a bad couple of days for drinkers.

Steven Fielding thinks that nothing is being done to curb drinking especially that Alchopops tax thing. Even one of his staff got shitfaced. If I worked for Fielding I'd probably drink to excess too. It's interesting to see how culture-dependent yob-alcohol behaviour is.

Australia's one of the worst places, blokes have a drink and then seem to feel empowered to beat the shit out of people nearby. The US, which has loads of social problems, isn't nearly so bad. France is generally pretty cool. Japan seems to have charming wobbly men who apologise profusely when they fall over.

Gross generalisations, but there are few countries in the world where I look over my shoulder in pubs around closing time. Australia's one of them, much of the UK is another.

I used to live in a charming location in Holland, where the big problem was stopping the drunks from singing too loudly after 4am.
