So I watched The Hollowmen last night. Being working dogs return to satire after years of doing light entertainment I had high expectations. Frontline is one of my favourite australian comedies and having them apply their satirical wit to the political scene filled me with anticipation. Of course they had a hard act to follow with truly excellent Read more... )

The original plan for The West Wing was to feature President Bartlet four to six times a year, and base the rest of the series around his staff when he's not in the room.

That plan lasted until the producers saw Martin Sheen's five minute appearance at the end of the pilot. Cue hurried offers of enormous amounts of money to keep him in the show every week, and an unintended slap in the face to Rob Lowe who'd signed onto the series on the understanding he would be its star.

Yeah, I think you've told me that before. So do you get ABC now?

Haha! I plugged in the box and got widescreen versions of 7, 9 and 10, plus a jittery pixellated mess with the soundtrack of the ABC.

Damnit, I wanted you take on the Gil Mayo mysteries. I guess I'll have to figure out how to turn mpeg streams into divx format or something. That and get a 8 gig flash drive.

Also have you ever watched Grass Roots? It's like an antidote to the over romanticising that the West Wing has a tendency to do to politics.

I found it interesting in a low-key kind of way, and in many ways frighteningly believable. Rob Sitch's character is a bit too clueless for my liking, but it would make sense if he'd been parachuted in from some completely different department where he was good at something else. That could just be wishful thinking; I like competant intelligent people.

I was a little underwhelmed by the first episode, too. A little too predictable, characters not quite distinct enough.
It could get better, I hope it does.
