In general, men are not good in giving gifts. That plus the fact that they would really want something nice for their significant other means they are in trouble. But your Peter seems to be doing fine, so he shouldn't worry too much.
Usually when I buy things, I weigh whether it's cheap, it's useful, if it's something I really want, etc. etc. I'll hem and haw over it for a long time, which is kind of painful for Peter to watch when I end up walking away ten minutes later.
It was possibly the only item I saw, went "I want it", then backed off when I heard the cost. So I'm surprised that he got them, but quietly happy that he bought me something so pretty and desirable and impractical because I wouldn't buy it for myself. Ever. (Unless I was rich.)
My grandfather had this mindset that you should buy the things you want or get yourself the best when you are getting/buying something, even if it is rather expensive, because you deserve it. Of course there are people who are not materialistic and opt for buying as little or getting the cheapest possible things. So your Peter is either making you not worry too much about money, or just simply wants the best for you.
