Character's Name: Machi Tobaye
Series: Ace Attorney
Timeline: Post Turnabout Serenade
Canon Resource Link: Machi AA Wiki | Machi Court Records | YouTube Walkthrough of Turnabout Serenade

Personality: Machi is a troubled fourteen year old who has seen more than his share of fallouts. He was an orphan until he met Lamiroir, a blind Borginian songstress. Though Machi normally doesn't take to strangers, he and Lamiroir developed a bond deeper than instrumentalist partners. Machi trusts her so deeply that he pretends to be blind in order to preserve Lamiroir's image. To the few he trusts, such as Lamiroir and, to an extent, Daryan, he is extremely loyal. (He claims to have been friends with LeTouse but I don't know how likely that actually is.) For the rest of the population, Machi is mostly anti-social, preferring solitude than their company.

This piano prodigy is the silent type. Most of Machi's speech - or lack of, to be precise - is ".. .. ..", and when he's surprised, it's ".. .. .. !". He speaks few words and even then he speaks briefly. Machi has a limited understanding of English but he can speak understandable, but not grammatically correct, English. (I'm assuming he isn't aware of most slang or the lexicon of academia.) He has an accent from his native tongue, Borginian: "Justice" becomes "Yoostis".

He's not the best liar, but he's so stubborn that he'll stick with them as long as he can: Machi insists on keeping up the blind act and not speaking English until he is pressed to admit otherwise in court. When his lies explode, Machi is still hesitant to speak. There is, however, a slim difference between instances where Machi refuses to speak and when he chooses to lie. The situation chosen for one or the other is one of the more complicated aspects of his personality. Though Lamiroir means a lot to Machi, he didn't tell her about his situation or the plan of action he chose to remedy it.

Personally, I believe Machi feels quite guilty about a lot of things - his need for money, for example - and thus he goes out of his way to hide these insecurities from the ones who matter to him, namely Lamiroir. The balance between doing what he must do and being judged for doing those things by people who matter to him is what ultimately decides how he will lie or keep his silence. At the same time, when the cat is let out of the bag, Machi relies on those he knows he is harming to cover for him. He just really is a kid that doesn't want to get caught.

Lamiroir might sound like a broken record by this point but that's because she is essential to his being. She is the translator and go between person when it comes to Machi. Lamiroir at one point even says that it is she and Machi together which make "Lamiroir" (as in, the artist, not the person, derp).

Apparently Machi can get himself into some bad situations. Somehow he needed money so badly that he was willing to risk a death sentence in order to smuggle a cocoon from Borginia to LA. He may be a child but at the very least, Machi understands that money makes the world go 'round.

What your character can offer: He's pretty useless: he doesn't speak English well and even if he could, he's shy and keeps to himself. He trusts few and although he often foresees things falling apart, he goes through with them against better judgement (if he's desperate). He's still a kid; he needs to be taken care of. If Discedo had a piano lying around, then he could offer some awesometastic piano skills, but no, that's not likely.

What items will they be bringing with them? His shades and the clothes on his personage.

Third-Person Sample: Normally when you're escorted to your cell, you assume that it's a place you'll call "home" for at least a little bit. Machi was relieved to see this wasn't the case. He didn't care that it was some barren city filled with people he wouldn't understand. It didn't matter; anywhere except for Borginia was fine by him, and if he didn't have to serve any time for the smuggling, even better. If anything finding himself somewhere completely new ensured he didn't do anything stupid. That had been one of the things Daryan had taught him to do if things went south, along with "don't drop the soap".

Crescend. He wouldn't make that mistake again. The resolve to not trust anybody always faded fast but this time, this time he was sure to stick to it. This was a second chance. He wasn't going to screw up this time and he wasn't going to let anybody know he had screwed up before. But some second chance it was. Where he found himself didn't offer him the luxury of touring as Lamiroir's accompanist or all the perks that came with it. No, Machi was back to square one, left with nothing, the orphan that he was before the entire mess blew up.

It was daunting, finding himself alone for what felt like the first time. That hole of loneliness had been filled up and now that it was empty once more, it felt like he didn't truly know what loneliness was that first time. Lamiroir had always been near; she had relied on him and him on her. Machi anxiously played with the hem of his shirt. He really didn't know what to do with himself now. No, he knew what he had to do, it was just that the last time his survival was in his own hands, that didn't pan out so well.

His resolve was already fading. Soon enough he'd need food. And where would he sleep? There were things he needed and he knew how eat or be eaten worked; that's why he always helped the strong ones. Crescend and Lamiroir had both been strong; he was only the necessary accompaniment who was able to get the scraps on the side thanks to them.

Machi hesitantly grabbed the phone he'd woken up near. The writing was familiar but foreign -- go figure, English. He wasn't stupid, though. Just seeing the device, he knew it had to be a phone of some sort. Finally left to speak for himself, he grabbed it after much deliberation and waited for somebody to start speaking to him.

First-Person Sample: .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. Where is?

[ In fear of implicating himself all over again, he's not going to say where exactly he was last, or where he expected to find himself. ]

.. .. .. Is no good. My talking is no good. I understanding this. .. .. .. .. .. .. But-- [ quick spluttering of Borginian ] --needing words. How say? .. .. .. .. Explanation. I need. You hearing . . . you tell me.

[ There's a very long pause, one might think the feed died out, but Machi knows a certain somebody will be listening to the very last second of silence. ]

We needing talk. You know who is.

HEADCANON.
  • When able to speak Borginian, he's a little turd: "Try again, sucker." He also laughs when people do the obviously wrong thing: "...Hee hee." HE'S NOT NICE.
  • Going off the pun for his name, "Much To Buy", I kinda have this notion that he thinks buying things solve everything, or that anything can bought (which, actually, is pretty much true).

PERMISSIONS.

Out-of-character activity:
  1. Backtagging: I'm the queen of backtagging. No matter how long a thread takes to finish up, I'll gladly move to your beat!
  2. Threadhopping: I don't really like it, to be honest, but I don't mind. Threadhop away if it's IC.
  3. Fourthwalling: I'd rather not.
  4. Canon puncturing: Please don't.
  5. Offensive subjects: I'm really hard to offend so there's not much you could do to offend me. Machi is a little shota brat so just keep that in mind as far as subjects he'd respond to.

In-character activity:
  1. Hugging this character: HE WON'T LIKE IT.
  2. Kissing this character: HE DEFINITELY WON'T LIKE IT.
  3. Flirting with this character: You could try, but...
  4. Fighting with this character: I'd rather not, but talk to me since it might amuse me.
  5. Injuring this character: Run it by me first. As long as it's minor, I'm pretty okay with it, but don't go lopping off his limb or something, especially not his hands or fingers.
  6. Killing this character: More likely than not. If you're curious about this permission, he probably had it coming to him so talk to me!
  7. Using telepathy or mind reading abilities on this character: He doesn't have any defenses against this kind of this so sure. He direly wants a piano and they'll be able to know about his role in the smuggling and the fate which he'll try to play dumb about.

BORGINIAN.
