Best Friends [Locked to Brian]

Butch stands at the edge of the lake, looking expectantly in the direction that the owl will be coming. He and his boyfriend have been exchanging messages at the same time every day since Butch had returned to school. Just after lunch, Butch comes down to this isolated spot to wait. It's a strange new feeling to look forward to something so much, and even though he thinks it should make him feel silly, it doesn't. In fact, he actually likes having this little secret for himself. He's casually mentioned his friend to his dormmates, but they don't know that he's actually someone Butch is finding himself caring about more and more as odd as that thought is to him.

His face lights up when he sees the bird come into view, and he digs into his pocket for a little treat for it. When it lands, he takes off the note attached to its leg and sits down to read it.

I can't believe how boring things are around here. I blame you for making things far too interesting before you had to leave. It's amazing how little I want to actually do if you're not here to do it with me. I know, you'll think that's silly and pathetic, but I suppose I'm really starting to miss you, now. Notes just aren't the same as seeing you face to face. Obvious statement, I know, but take that as a compliment. I miss that mug of yours.

I should send this before I start to wax poetic about your eyes or your mouth or how much I miss kissing you. By the way, I hope this is embarrassing you. I know how much you hate all the "mushy" stuff.

Have I mentioned how much I love this owl? It's quite possibly the best present anyone's ever given me, if only because it lets me feel closer to you while you're gone.

All right. Enough of that. I look forward to your reply.

Love,
C

Butch grins as he re-reads the note, then starts to compose his own. He's never comfortable being as chatty as his boyfriend, and this time is no different.

Yes, you're pathetic and silly. Go out and have some fun, then tell me all about it. I expect to hear something good.

Miss you, too. I'll forgive the sap but only because I happen to be a very generous and giving person.

Glad you like the owl. I still can't believe you named him David, but anything that makes you think of me can't be bad, can it?

Love,
B

He gets up and attaches the note to the owl's leg and pets it before it takes off.
