moar skating
Overall: not nearly as horrifying to me personally as men's!
I've never followed women's - excuse me, "ladies'" - skating as closely as men's so most of the competitors I'd never seen in action i.e. all the medal contenders except Ando Miki and Asada Mao. I was in Japan for Torino and heard allllll about the Evil Rulemakers that wouldn't let Mao compete. At the time it irritated me, in retrospect I wince - that was clearly The Chance that just barely got away.
Anyway, to get it out of the way, I think Kim Yu-Na was overscored but not so much that she didn't deserve gold. Her short program was definitely head and shoulders above the rest but her free skate didn't particularly move me despite the effusive NBC commentators aughhhh they really know how to ruin a good performance by never shutting up. For once I felt much more emotion from Mao. (But of course she wasn't as technically perfect - the hitch in the middle killed me - or as graceful. Props for the triple axels though. o_o) Given what Kim's said about harrassment, though, and knowing a certain segment of Korean fans hahahaha I'm glad for her safety she won. ^^;;;;
But let's not kid ourselves, they both got upstaged by Joannie Rochette, bronze and all. Takeaway performance of the night. I mean, I don't think it was possible not to be rooting for her.
Pleasantly surprised Mirai Nagasu got fourth, she was excellent and her spins are totally amazing. *_* I was hoping Ando Miki would do better because I've been a partisan fan ever since the Japanese press started to give her hell about her weight - seriously, are you kidding?? - but I can't really quibble with it.
Oh, and I really liked Suzuki Akiko's short program, too, but they showed neither her scores nor her long program, and she ended up in 8th. I don't begrudge the various 18th, 21st, etc. place finishers that were shown their time on screen at all but if you're going to drastically cut and paste an event in the first place... Basically every day I hate NBC's style of coverage more and more. Don't even get me STARTED on wht they do to hockey.
