‘In 1945, we told the world not again. In 1995, we forgot our promise.’

I was disgusted this morning to wake up and read my newspaper. There was a picture of Serbian children, probably around 7-8 years around, carrying pictures of Radovan Karadzic with the words ‘PRAYER’.

Oh, parents. Keep your children off your political agenda. Goodness! These children hadn’t even been born when we had to witness one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century: when so many people were driven away from their home and slaughtered, when so many women were raped, killed afterwards or survived in shame. Do they even know who Karadzic is?

I’m glad Karadzic was caught. He must pay for all of his crimes. I think he (and also his supporters) is responsible in part of the rise of Islam fundamentalism worldwide today. ‘Bosnia’ is one of the keyword used by Muslim preachers all over the world to ‘remind Muslims’ that ‘the enemies are out there, trying to destroy Islam and killing us all’.

Have we never learnt? Look at what hundreds of years of oppression and the holocaust have brought us: an oppressive country named Israel, so hated by its neighbours that its football team must play in the UEFA zone with European teams, not with Asian ones.

And look what oppressive acts of the Israeli government and military have brought us: so many Jews and Muslims nowadays are ready to lunge at each other’s throat, thinking the other party as backwards, violent people.

‘…evil unleashed from a broken heart, pain manifested into a focused vengeance for the murder of a loved one, is a pure passion that is not only illogical and regressive, but unmistakably human. One might try to understand this yes humanity, but what of the cultural eradication, the rape and displacement and all of the belligerent murderous atrocities committed against hundreds of thousands of people, in the name of nationalism, personal gain and profit?’ - Krist Novoselic
