Ha. So who said that the events portrayed in Ekskul never happened in Indonesia in reality? A 34 high schooler was admitted to the hospital with a broken arm; he was bullied by his seniors, members of the Gazper gang. The gang boasted of 250 members (a record if a state-owned high school has approximately 1500 students) - I’ve seen their graffitis around for years but I hadn’t understood what it meant until the case came under spotlight. They would beat up in restroom boys who wouldn’t obey them. Many people deny that such gangs exist; now see what it’s come to.
I read sometime ago in a piece written by Rosihan Anwar that the first modern Indonesian gay novel was published in 1922 (wow). The author used a pseudonym (understandably!) and the novel told the story of a priyayi (blue-blooded) 13-year old boy who had a secret relationship with one of his seniors at school. If only a publisher want to re-release the novel… I would really love to read it.
