his computer's a piece of crap man! its slow as hell. plus i need to figure out how to add a com2 port so that i can have this one program running at the same time as the internet, because i guess com1 and com3 overlap sorta . well something. so i need a com2 port

COM2 is a virtual port, and should be assigned to the second serial port. Is he using an external dial-up modem?

yea external, its isdn

see what happened was that we had everything going good, already been setup a while ago on this one computer. but then my brother went and bought him a newer better one i guess (it's still runs like a piece of shit if you ask me) and wanted me to come down there to re install all the programs he needed and do all the configuring and shit.
and now i just have to do this com2 thingie and then i should be good to go.

Do you know what it is that's trying to use the port, like UPS? Not many things still use COM ports, so you can probably just disable it if there's a conflict. COM1 should be the first serial port, and COM2 should be the second. There are other ports available for devices like internal modems.

Does ProComm emulate a serial port? If so, just make sure that it's not trying to use COM1 or COM2. Keep COM1&2 available for the physical serial ports, modem and UPS. What's he using ProComm for anyway? There's probably a better way to do whatever he's doing.

I have to have procomm on com1, and from what I am told, our ups and internet connection is on com3.. and i guess those work together..so i can only use one or the other. which is why i need com2

If procomm is simulating com1, I guess you can set the two serial ports as com2 and com3. You can't share a port between the modem and ups.
