you speak english!

One of the funny things that starts to happen to you when you're in a foreign country speaking a foreign language is that you really start to notice when other people are speaking your native language. When I'm on the bus or in the mall and hear someone speaking English, I have a strong urge to ask them where they're from and start a conversation. I pretty much never do though. I guess I'm not the only one who gets that urge, but other people actually act on it.

Today I was in Quicentro with Bronte (we are such mallrats, it's shameful). We were walking near the escalators, and I saw a couple of girls going up. I made some off-hand remark that they must be foreign, because one of them was wearing shorts and a rather back-exposing shirt. (No one in Quito wears shorts ever, and shirts like that are usually seen in discotecas here.) Typical temptation to chase after them and talk, but of course didn't. We proceeded to the bookstore, and guess what? They were there. I guess they heard us speaking English, because they asked where we were from. We chatted with them for a while, that we're here for a year with Rotary whereas they're here a semester with their college (some place in New Hampshire) and so on. It was fun and interesting. We swapped emails and stuff (they were impressed/amused by my Rotary cards, lol), though I honestly doubt that we'll really actually write each other, lol. They're only here another 17 days, leaving June 3rd. I am back in 29 days, which is just over 4 weeks. Wow. Running out of time...

Anyway, having that conversation amused me, so I decided to write about it. So there. :D
