Rory ran as fast as he could, abandoning his flower and apology on the floor. The hunched creatures chased after him, keeping at his heels. When Rory looked over his shoulder, he could see the tall creatures in suits floating above the ground. One had something red and dripping in one hand, and it carefully lowered it into a jar. The other had a sharp scalpel, also dripping.
Rory attempted to run faster, shouting even though no one could hear.
*~*~*~*~*
Amy ran through the TARDIS, but when Rory was nowhere to be found, she wound her way back to the counsel room. The Doctor was typing, but he shook his head at Amy’s look of panic. No Rory. Where could Rory be? He couldn’t be dumb enough to go outside.
‘Unless he went looking for you,’ Amy thought bitterly. ‘Why can’t I learn to keep my big mouth shut?’ She grabbed her coat from the hat rack and went back out on the streets, the Doctor following behind. She had no idea where Rory would be, but she would find him.
They quickly found themselves in the Christmas park. They both spotted movement on the path ahead at the same time, and rushed into the bushes.
Two tall creatures were floating above the ground, moving closer and closer to where Amy and the Doctor were hiding. Amy recoiled at their hideous grins. She prayed they would pass quickly. Instead, they turned, approaching an unfinished house. Amy and the Doctor watched as they floated up the steps and entered the building. The Doctor grabbed Amy’s sleeve, dragging her closer to the house. Feeling her heart in her throat, Amy peeked through the bottom of a window, while the Doctor did the same.
There were more creatures gathered in the room. The two arriving men nodded to their fellows, then one pulled a small jar from its breast pocket and placed it on the table. Amy squinted to see what was inside the five full jars. She tapped the Doctor’s shoulder, pointing to them. He said something she didn’t understand, then outlined a heart with his hands.
Amy suddenly wished she hadn’t asked.
She noticed a box sitting next to the jars. Excitedly she pointed to it, shaking the Doctor. ‘That’s the box the little girl had!’ she mouthed. The Doctor tried to see what she was so excited about. Amy mimicked opening a box in her hand, but then returned her focus to the room inside.
How could they get it?
*~*~*~*~*
Rory had gained a little ground, and stopped at a hotel room door. He banged with all his might, trying to alert the people within. When his pursuers rounded the corner, he paused, breathing heavily, albeit silently. No one was coming to help him, he thought, exhausted and terrified. From within, he heard the sounds of furniture being moved to block the door.
Rory took off again. If he could get to his own room again, he might be safe.
He turned at a T-stop, then skidded to a halt. Two more of the creatures were ahead of him, far down the hall. They turned at the sight of him, and one pointed straight at him. The other nodded, and they began floating forwards.
Rory took off down the hall to his left, already starting to slow from exhaustion.
*~*~*~*~*
Amy was positioned under the open window at the back of the house. The Doctor had moved around front, planning a distraction. Amy would then run inside and get the box. Or at least, she thought that was the plan. The Doctor was even harder to understand than usual.
She heard a sharp rapping, and peeked inside. The Doctor couldn’t seriously be knocking at the front door. Fortunately, the creatures inside seemed distracted. They began to move out of the room, towards the front door. Amy heard the creak of the door and decided to take her chance now. She hoisted herself up and into the room.
The Doctor stood cheerfully on the front steps, waving and bidding a silent ‘cheerio!’ as the door opened. His lips moved quickly as he babbled, and he slowly scooted backward. The creatures in suits exchanged glances, then stepped back and allowed low creatures in white jackets to squeeze by. They made for the Doctor, but he aimed his sonic screwdriver at the lamp overhead on the porch. It detached from the ceiling, falling on the two creatures. Then he started away from the building, hoping the murderous creatures were in the mood for a good chase.
*~*~*~*~*
Rory didn’t know how much farther he could run, but he didn’t know what else to do. His feet pounded down another corridor, but he called out without sound when something collided into him. He lost all sense and opened his mouth to scream. The creatures in white jackets had cut him off, tackling him to the ground. They quickly grabbed his arms, holding him in place.
He saw two tall shadows floating closer.
*~*~*~*~*
Amy kept shooting terrified glances to the doorway as she approached the table. Now she could clearly see the hearts within the jars. She tried not to think about it and picked up the box. It felt oddly heavy. Now that she had it, she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do with it. A creak startled her, and she dropped the box to the floor. She caught sight of a grinning face, then she looked down at the box. It had fallen open, and white mist was quickly escaping, traveling quickly through the air. One tendril of smoke twisted and curled up towards her, and she gasped as it entered her mouth and warmed her throat.
Another curl of fog wound its way out the window. It passed the Doctor, still running from the loping creatures and began to navigate the corridors: left, right, right, straight, left, it continued until it found two suited gentlemenly beasts bending close over a human man. It seeped between the crowd, entering the human’s mouth and causing him to gasp.
And then he screamed.
The creatures froze in horror, backing away and twitching uncontrollably at the sound. The one dropped the scalpel in his hand. Rory kept screaming, not stopping until the heads of the creature exploded. Slime covered the walls, the floor and Rory himself. He was breathing heavily, waiting for his heart rate to slow. When it did, he gingerly got to his feet. His mind couldn't do much more than listen to the sound of his own breath.
Rory trudged along the corridors until he found his way to the Christmas Park. Amy saw him from afar and ran to him, throwing her arms around him.
“Rory, you’re safe! And you’re covered in...” She looked into Rory’s panicked eyes. “Are you okay Rory?” Rory thought about it, swallowing. He nodded. The Doctor came up behind Amy, patting her back.
“Got to the box I see. Rory! Oh, my, your clothes seem a little worse for wear.” He picked at the trailing mess that covered Rory’s shirt.
“Rory, say something, please,” Amy pleaded. Rory took a deep breath.
“I’m sorry. For... whatever we were fighting about.” Amy hugged him again.
“It was a stupid fight. I don’t even remember what it was about. You don’t need to be sorry; I’m sorry. God, I’m happy to hear your voice.”
Eventually, slowly, the trio wandered back towards the TARDIS. Their nerves were worse for wear, but Rory had to agree with Amy. It was good to hear her voice.
