I'm not very good at politics. Most of my viewpoints are unoriginal, made from words other people said I logged away to repeat if ever an opportunity arose to use them. That being said, I still have no idea what the U.S. exit strategy is for leaving iraq. I think I'd feel a lot better about it if we just went ahead and decalred iraq a protectorate of the US, and that we have no intentions of leaving for another 20 years. At least then I wouldn't wonder if the war was ending any time soon.
Totally understandable. Besides, just because you're not "good at" politics is no reason to not have an opinion. You're an intelligent, aware, American citizen. But I don't see you as the type of person to make a political agenda your pet project, or a way to make you feel like a better person. I mean, I think you'd want to examine all the facts, and if someone had something to say, you'd probably at least listen before ridiculing or passing a judgement- which is ok, and a hell of a lot better than what most people do
( ... )
btw, the strategy we have (and I think Bush has said this- but I'm not positive) is to wait until either the elected Iraqi government asks us to leave, or till it can support itself and enforce its laws and authority without our help.
And keep in mind, the idea is not to create an American copy of democracy, or British. They're based on Judeo-Christian values. Not even an Indian form of democracy, but an Iraqi one. If it's based on Muslim core principles, that's ok. But people have a basic right to their own government.
i'm not a big fan of Sheehan, but at least she's raised awareness of the war and gotten americans thinking about why we're there and what we're doing. even though i don't agree with her on everything, i think it's important for us to think about where our soldiers are going and where our tax dollars are going. and, ultimately, have some input as to what happens. the administration has been incredibly tight-lipped and at times misleading about why we started the war and how and when we're going to end it.
And I guess I do come in at the lef tof politics more than anywhere else, but it is low a - low to use Sheehan and b - if one is going to use her at least inform her...
but... some things will not be...
I didn't think we (Australia, America and our Allies) had ample justificaiton for going over there when we did, but having gone over there, (and good things have been done over there, just that old good things for the wrong reasons) we need to finish it, and leave it as stable as we can.
As we can.
On a different note, Cheney -- Keep those guns out of his hands....
Personally, I think we did need to be over there, and that this did need to happen. I don't nessecarily like how we (politically) got to those ends
( ... )
Well I've never really thought of you as being right wing. Centrist I guess, but labels can get silly person can feel Strongly right about some.
I'd say you probly did have to go in -- compare with what happened with Not going in in WWII, but I resent being lied to.
And you're right, the media won't change what they're reporting now to let any grey in, grey takes up too many lines of newsprint to properly show, and the public, of course, is too blind to see it.
Not that I'm sarcastic on that or anything.
It's one of the ends justifying the means things though.

I miss you, too. Maybe when Adam and I finally get our own apartment, we'll have you come visit. Or we'll come up there. Whatever happens first. :-)
