University numbers

Mar 12, 2011 16:31

For the purposes of the recent ERA (Excellence in Research in Australia), the ARC (Australian Research Council) numbered the number of Australian universities at "41"

This 41 does not include "TAFE-colleges" - and, for the purposes of my question, perhaps it's best described as institutions which - at a minimum - produce under-graduate degrees (bachelor level).  Most of these institutions also produce Postgraduate level qualifications, including Masters and PhD.  In addition, it is assumed that a "university" will produce RESEARCH.  TAFE-lecturers, while I'm sure some of them do research, are not expected to produce research the way university lecturers are.

My Question:  Approximately how many universities are there in the U.S.A.? (using the definition above of an institution which at a minimum produces Bachelor undergraduates, and who's lecturers are expected to do research).   For that matter, how many would there be in the UK? Other nationalities can add their number too if you wish.

I'm sure there will be a variety of answers?  a ball-park figure....  ??
