Earn a masters while a post doc?

I was out with some friends-of-friends the other night and someone mentioned that he had heard of postdocs for biology-ish PhDs that were coupled with earning a Masters of Public Health.  I tried googling this once I got home and had a lot of trouble finding anything.  Does anyone have any information about this type of combination and/or ( Read more... )

A friend of mine with an MD did a post-doc in public health in Pittsburgh that involved a placement at a community clinic and an MPH at Pitt. Not sure if that's quite what you're looking for, but it's the only thing I personally know of offhand (though I'm a social scientist, so don't rely much on that).

It might depend on the PI (who controls the funding), but I've heard of people in non-public health fields (albeit not in biology that I know of) tacking on an MPH at the post-doc (or even doctoral) level at the University of Florida: http://www.mph.ufl.edu/programs/acceleratedmasters.htm

I am not personally familiar with the programs myself, but I have used petersons.com to help students find combos like that....

A friend of mine who is earning PhD in immunology right now has finished MBA last year. I do not know about MS in PH, but why not?

Just an FYI, an MPH is not an MS.

Well. In general it does not matter much for me, but thanks! It's always good to know how things are called even though you're in a different field.

I have an MPH. There are a ton of programs throughout the US that allow people with another advanced degree to get an MPH on a faster time table (1 year versus the normal 2 years) than someone going directly into an MPH program without an advanced degree. There are definitely programs for MDs in residency (or people working on an MD) to get an MPH while in residency, so there may be similar things for post-docs. Something to keep in mind is that an MPH is a professional degree. You might want to check out the program search tool through ASPH here:
