Reading Suggestions

Nov 18, 2009 21:59

[Disclaimer: This post is in no way a request for your help with academic work. I'm not currently a student, either, and I don't know any professors I could ask for this information.]

If anyone knows of any must-read material on the subject of globalization, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could leave me some suggestions. Subtopics that I'd particularly like to study are the political, economic, and social influences and consequences of globalization. Sources that discuss the historical contexts of globalization would also be helpful, regardless of the areas of the world upon which they focus.

I recognize that some of the political subtopics of globalization might also require additional reading on various types of government. Your suggestions for related material would also be helpful.

Lastly, since I'm only slightly familiar with the concept/term "globalization," does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should structure my reading? If any of you have taught related courses and you don't mind sharing your syllabi, that would be awesome.

[Edit: Thank you all for your recommendations. You've been a great help.

Also, a friend of mine brought to my attention that the implications of "must-read" aren't necessarily the attributes I'm looking for in the material I'd like to read, so I'll amend this entry to say that I'm just looking for material that anyone in a scholarly setting would normally suggest because the information and sources used are reliable. I don't mind if the overall opinions of the authors differ from one another--in fact, that's even better. That the information they provide is based in fact or solid evidence is all that matters to me.]
