I am using some information from an archaeological investigation as part of the basis for my interpretation of the data I collected myself from material from the site. This information was obtained from a Masters thesis completed 8 years ago, and it doesn't appear that the author has published anything on the site material since. The paper in which I cited this information (as part of a larger discussion) has been accepted for publication in an academic journal.
It has rather belatedly occurred to me that there might be issues in citing specific data from a thesis (as opposed to a published article or book), and that I should perhaps seek the permission of the author to do so. Is this something that is considered usual to do, or simply a matter of courtesy, or not at all usual?
