iPod Flash Card Programs

Has anyone here ever used one of the handy programs that allow you to create flashcards for perusal on your iPod? There are several programs that do this, but no freeware ones, as far as I've found. Here are the two most prevalent programs I've come across:

Flash My Brain (USD$40)

iPod Flash Cards (USD$25 ( Read more... )

That's the first really good use of an iPod I've seen (I mean besides the main "play music" function). I don't have much use for flashcards these days, but I would also be interested in hearing how well the programs work. I'd be particularly interested to hear whether they can handle non-Western alphabets and scientific symbols.

The Flash My Brain one looks like it is really prolific, and will let you do molecule structures and whatnot. I will definitely post a review here once I get one of these up and running. I am constantly trying to study during my commute and I'm inseparable from my iPod, so I feel this would help me out since I'm edu-phase of having to commit formulas and vocab to memory regularly.

This site ( http://www.foreignercn.com/index.php/action_viewnews_itemid_9677.html ) suggest that it can handle both Chinese characters and pinyin, so there's certainly some non-latin-alphabet support.

I don't know what that Zelek software person is thinking by showing an online demo that shows you how to install the program, and not what the software looks like.

For that reason alone I'd buy the other one!

The Flash My Brain one looks more professional anyway. I'll probably go that route unless someone can show me a freeware bare-bones program that actually works - I am shocked that those clever kids at MIT haven't done this yet, I mean come on.

on a slightly related topic, i've started using audio hijack (which has a demo version available free) to take the audio from my arabic class dvds and turn it into ipod compatible files, and handbrake to take the video and transfer it. that might not be as useful for what you're doing, but is crazy useful for my long subway commute.

I do it the conventional way -- create BMP files and upload them as photos. Or drag and drop into Notes for plaintext. Besides flashcards, the iPod's also great for 'listening' to lectures/talks, if there are slides available online. (The MIT OCW site does a good job of that.) You will have to convert from PDF/PPT to individual images, though. All probably a bit time-consuming, but it is free!
