having one student

Feb 01, 2007 17:36

This semester, in addition to my TA gig, I got assigned to lead a weekly discussion section which is supposed to supplement an intro lecture. This is the first semester that discussion sections have been offered, and for some reason the department decided not to make them mandatory. Because of this, I have one student. This situation would be tolerable with some students, perhaps, but the one that I have is incredibly quiet and not too cooperative. She told me that she doesn't plan on dropping the course because "it seems easy." A better teacher would probably be able to pull this off, but I'm not very experienced. Also, I am not supposed to cover material that wasn't addressed in the course, which leaves me with a 3 hour lecture to get 1.5 hours of discussion out of one person.

Any suggestions?
