Dissertation vs. Practicum

Hello all,

I am curious as to what everyone thinks about the growing trend towards offering PhD Candidates a choice between a dissertation or a practicum (usually 3 papers of sufficient quality to be accepted for journal publication).

I personally plan on doing the standard dissertation (IF I get my data from the feds), but I can see the utility of the 3 paper option. I know a lot of people end up having a hard time getting 3 papers worth of material out of their diss.

The practicum seems to be becoming a more common option every year. I see a fair number of high quality schools offering it. How do you think hiring comities will view candidates who took the practicum route? Will they be viewed as having done the same work as a diss, or will tradition and perhaps snobbery lead them to view people who chose the practicum differently?

I am sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't see it in the tags
