Which is actually the opposite of what I was told, just for fun and confusion. ;) I wove my personal story through-out my SOP, switching fluidly between it and my academic interests and goals. I focused very heavily on me - the story that got me here, my interests, my passions, why I do what I do and why I want to continue doing it.

But, I think this might be an important detail: that's how I teach. I tell stories. And I have a very long and strong background in writing professionally, so translating my style of teaching to my style of writing wasn't at all difficult.

Othersunknown: I think your answer in general is going to depend on the program. I specifically opted to apply to programs I believed would be a good fit for my personality - the couple of longshots that weren't good matches turned me down almost immediately. And to my delight, the absolute perfect match - the one everyone, all my advisers and academic friends pushed me towards - accepted me without reservation (and a lot of delight on their part too, actually). So field? Not so important as the specific program.

I'm assuming you want to know the program I'm going into; I'm going into a bioethics/philosophy program.
