Summary: A few moments can be the difference between life and death, and one life can change so much more. The scene is set.
Notes: Well, I've been talking about doing this for ages, and I've finally at least got this part knocked out. I will try not to overwhelm you all with my Eden-fangirling. Title is from Mirah's Special Death; cut text is from Genesis 2:10, because my main character's name is way too evocative for her own good.
Within a man's body, strange and powerful forces collided. No natural law could cover them all. Time and space and light and the human mind tangled up together...
And exploded.
The shock waves did not restrict themselves to one time and place, but bounced back and forth through history. Given that, maybe it was surprising that so little changed. Or maybe not; history always has a very great weight of inertia.
But maybe some things can be changed. Something just near enough in time to the event, and just dependent enough on a few moments either way... something like that, perhaps, might change.
In a secret cell in Texas, a woman blew her own brains out, to deny them to another. The prisoner's captors arrived to bring him down before her body had even hit the ground.
And the ripples came through, time dilating in the cell
n o w e d e n , y o u s h o u l d k n o w t h a t w o n ' t h u r t m e
and compressing outside
theglassbrokenthesilentalarmthedashdownthehallthetranquilizerguns
and Eden stared defiantly into the killer's eyes, raising the gun to her head...
And the door behind her burst open, and the telekinetic grip loosened as the Haitian's mental static blanketed the room. Sylar's body sprouted half a dozen tranquilizer darts, and sank to the ground.
Eden looked up at Bennet, and took a moment to catch her breath.
"What happens now?" she gasped.
