After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 6 2006, 17:13:41 UTC
After checking to make certain that Yazoo's been sent home from the clinic, Geoff pulls on his coat and heads across town toward the causeway. He doesn't know Loz's brothers very well, and he's thinking that this might be the perfect opportunity to remedy that.
Climbing the stairs to the porch, he knocks at the door.

After making sure Hunter was still passed out in the spare bedroom, Yazoo limped back down the stairs and was almost at the sofa when he heard the knock.
The door opened slowly and he saw Geoff standing on the porch. "Hey," he said. Looking out the door, he nodded his head to the closed door on the shop. "Loz went to the mainland to get a head gasket kit. He'll be back soon."

Nodding again, Yazoo stood out of the way for Geoff to come in and he gestured to the sofa. "Heal fast," he said, closing the door. "But I'm bored. I finished reading all the books we have and the work Loz gave me is done. Nice to have visitors," he finished softly.

"Oh, if I'd known you were out of reading material, I could have brought you something. I've got an entire room full of books at my disposal in my new classroom at the school." Geoff grins, obviously excited about his new teaching arrangements.
He takes a seat on the sofa, stretching his legs out in front of him and crossing them at the ankles. "Your brothers are both away, then? No offense to you, Yazoo, I'm sure you're perfectly capable of taking care of yourself. But I'm surprised they left you while you're still recovering."
Re: After Hunterac_brothersJanuary 6 2006, 20:07:25 UTC
"They trust I won't go anywhere, especially since Loz took the starter for my bike," Yazoo said ruefully. "I can't kickstart it. Besides, they'll only be gone an hour."
The books had Yazoo's attention, however. "You are teaching your class in the library?"
Re: After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 6 2006, 20:16:25 UTC
Geoff laughs. "God, no! That place is mad. No, actually, I have a bookcase that stretches the entire wall of the classroom, plus a book closet with reading material for my classes. And my office adjoins CJ's," he adds, grinning.
"I'll tell you, I wasn't sure about this teaching job to begin with, but I'm really looking forward to it. Do you three have plans for anything interesting coming up?"
Re: After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 6 2006, 20:38:18 UTC
"Same as last term, but I actually get the entire term to teach it this time. Introduction to Western Literature and Poetry Writing. It's given me a chance to get familiar with a good bit of literature myself, really. Right now I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird. It's interesting."
Grinning at Yazoo's question about CJ, he adds, "Yeah, there are several of us who share a wing of rooms. CJ's got the office right next to mine, and Adam's down the hall."
Re: After Hunterac_brothersJanuary 6 2006, 21:53:04 UTC
"A full term." Yazoo looked thoughtful and smiled. "That's kind of cool. How do you teach? I mean, they read what you say they should read and then what? You talk about what you read?"
Re: After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 6 2006, 22:33:24 UTC
Geoff's a little surprised at Yazoo's interest in his teaching, but then again this is probably the most he's ever spoken to the young man. "Well...first I give some kind of lecture, generally about literary forms and maybe some history of what they've been reading. Then there's a discussion about the assigned reading, based on specific topics I choose. For instance, they might discuss the meanings of a some of the symbols in a work, or how it compares to a similar story by a different author. There'll be a writing project for them to turn in at the end of the term. The poetry class is similar, except that they're also assigned to actually write poems as part of their classwork."

Yazoo was interested. He had never been in school that he remembered. How they knew what they knew, none of them had figured out. Sometimes he wondered if they were missing anything by not having had it. "What is there to dicuss? Isn't everything said already said by the writer?"
Re: After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 6 2006, 23:19:17 UTC
Shaking his head, Geoff answers, "But all you're getting is what the writer wants you to see, and sometimes that intention is hidden, or difficult to understant

"But if the writer is dead, then all you can do is guess at what he meant. What if he didn't mean anything?" Yazoo was almost settled in on the sofa when he thought of something. "Do you want something to drink?"
Re: After Huntergeoff_chaucerJanuary 7 2006, 00:34:36 UTC
"Um, sure, I'd love something to drink. But I'll get it, Yazoo. I know where the kitchen is, and you're supposed to be enjoying your convalescence." Geoff grins. "This is the best part of getting sick or injured -- people still think you can't do for yourself, but you feel well enough to enjoy being waited on. What would you like?"
He stands and heads for the kitchen, stopping in the doorway to reply to Yazoo's question. "True, and true. You can only guess at the writer's meaning, even if the writer's still alive, because chances are you're not going to get him to tell you about his work personally. But that's part of the reason for the class. To help you examine the work, and what you know about the author and his society, so you can at least form a reasonable idea about what the author means. And sometimes that doesn't really matter as much as what you think he means. Because, again, it's partly about examining your own ideas as well."

"Juice," he said, resting back on the sofa again. Yazoo wasn't about to argue with Geoff, he was tired, especially after Hunter.
He sighed and watched the other man closely. Loz talked a lot about Geoff, but knowing his brother, didn't say anything to Geoff about it. So he felt like he knew quite a bit about him. "It all sounds confusing and I guess I'm just...dumb because really, I don't care what the author meant or really what it means to me. I just like to read and be entertained. Is that bad?"
Climbing the stairs to the porch, he knocks at the door.
