Netscape was founded by Marc Andreeson, who went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. He worked with the school's NCSA program. He wrote the first graphical browser, called Mosaic. Then, a little after he graduated college in 1993, he went off to co-found Netscape (had other names before that).
Anyway: good wikipedia article on him http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Andreessen. And, frequently, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is called the father of the world-wide-web, because he came up with the ideas about sharing content in a standard way online.
By the way, I used to use Mosaic when it came out.
But there wasn't much WWW content back then :)
