April Round Up

Stories I recced:

I got to borrow Sam Carter for April reccing over at stargateficrec. *squishes Sam*

Turn and Face the Strain by Syxp (if only all pregnancy fics were this good. spot-on Sam)

Turn and Face the Strain by Rydra Wong (Sha're and Sam. Can you get any better?)

Must Have Learned Them From A Million Stars by Minervacat (Amazing, amazing Sam and Sam and Daniel friendship. If you haven't read this yet, go do so now. I'll wait.)

Flashback by Ellen Caldera (Fascinating hypothesis on Machello and wonderful glimpse at the many sides of Sam)

The Same Boy You've Always Known by Svendra (Sam and Rodney in that matured relationship of snark and competition and yet, understanding)

Clinging as Condition (Bhava Rising) by Zorb (I think this is the best "Tin Man" related fic I've come across. Really perfect.)

Because reccing is addictive, and I'm crazy, I signed up for both "orginal character" and "Jack O'Neill" for May.

Stories I wrote:

April marked my 10th SG-1 fic. Scary. Also, a sad reflection on how boring real life is right now because these guys are so much more fun to play with.

Lost | (PG) | 549 words | 4/7/07
Gen, ficlet, team
"An entire civilization gone." Daniel gestured vaguely with his right hand, sweeping across the distant, ruined city, and Jack watched the doll's stringy blonde hair float on the air.
(I wrote this when I was up way too late and feeling pissed off/fatalistic about the latest UN report on global warming)

The Burden of Command | (G) | 1432 words | 4/9/07
Gen, Jack O'Neill, team, early season 8
Jack was still waiting for someone to realize their mistake. Near as he could figure, he made general more due to an inability to make retirement or death actually stick than because he should actually have the job.
(totally an excuse to get Jack on a recumbent bicycle and Sam and Daniel playing with fingerpaint)

the selves we had to be | (PG) | 862 words | 4/20/07
Gen, Sam and Daniel, semi-apocalyptic future, written for thassalia's reunion challenge
It takes Sam ten years to find Daniel. Ten years after the leaders of every country on Earth fell to their knees as one and a chorus of "hallowed be the Ori" emanated from their lips.
(I don't know where this came from, but it's creepy and probably gets Jossed by episodes I haven't seen yet)

Preserve Your Memories (They're All That's Left You) | (R) | 8992 words | 4/24/07
Sam Carter, Daniel Jackson, early season 5
Daniel has done what Daniel does best - seamlessly merged into a new life and accepted this village as home. For their part, the villagers have been remarkably welcoming, admitting these tall strangers with lighter hair and skin into their midst even as Sam can't quite let herself fit.
(I still think this is the best story I've ever written. Definitely a tribute to Sam and Daniel and I still can't believe how easily it wrote itself - it mostly sprang fully formed from my brain, onto the computer screen)

Other fic I loved this month (so not a comprehensive list):

In His Kiss by eve11 - an interesting take on the people Daniel was with while he was Arrom with a very strong, original narrator voice. I love folktales and mythology so I'm always a sucker for fic told with an ear to how folktales sound, and this one was great.

Five Things Jack O'Neill Never Told Cameron Mitchell (because some things you have to learn on your own) by salieri - this is wonderful. And the fifth thing? I cannot get it out of my head because it is way beyond perfect.

If you're thinking of leaving (you're leaving at a very bad time) by Pellucid - an AU Daniel/Janet that's just wonderful and insightful and heartbreaking

Shades of Who I Used to Be (Stay a While and Maybe You'll See) by 6beforelunch - Jonas and Daniel during "Fallen" *loves it*

"Five Things" by 6beforelunch - the Cam Mitchell one she wrote for me was great, but the Sha're one was amazing. I love glimpses of Daniel and Sha're on Abydos.

A Mountain with a Wolf on it Stands a Little Taller by linnet_101 - Rigel has posted some cool stuff this month, especially some really awesome stuff with graphics. But this story, featuring clone!Jack, took the cake (or maybe pie).

Ambient by annerbhp - Sam/Jack written for schmoop_age. Since I'm a gen-girl at heart (yes, I wrote Sam/Daniel, shuddup) ship fics usually take a little extra convincing for me. The beautiful atmosphere of this piece and some of the wonderful character insights was convincing enough.

pepper_field's rood stick figure drawings of Fallen and Teal'c and Jonas and OT3 in a tent completely cracked me up.

Footsoldiers on Uneven Ground by _minxy_ - I'm late to the game with finding this story, but better late than never. A Teal'c and Bra'tac backstory with an inventive, beautiful look at Teal'c's mother.

By the Light of the Silvery Moon by kellifer_fic - hey, look, a story that isn't Stargate! I loved Willow and Oz back when I watched Buffy and this glimpse of a future for them left me all sniffly in a happy sort of way.

Netscapade by aurora_novarum - Cameron getting used to his new job and the team good-naturedly messing with him. What could be better?

And...I know there's been other stuff, but I need to get better about book-marking and keeping track. I suspect I should figure out how that delicious thing works.

ALSO! Go over to pepper_field's journal right now and read the Sam gets Wings snippet she wrote because it is the best, funniest thing ever.

I just took another look at my sd_ficathon prompts and realized I'd changed my plans on my story so many times it no longer really fulfills the prompt I was writing it for. Damn. *flails*
I'm pretty excited about gateverse_remix now that assignemnts are out (yay!). I'm not allowed to think about until I finish the sd_ficathon so I expect I will switch from "squee!" to "OMG I'm crazy!" right around May 16th.
