It was crowded. They were pushing against her, incoherent noises coming from their mouths. She could hear something beyond her cage, but it sounded foreign. The noises strung together, and she made out some combinations she heard before-“wizard” and “wonderful,” for example-and she wanted to retreat back.

He wasn’t good, and he hurt her. He hurt them all.

And then she heard a woman speak. Weird sounds-not like the sounds she heard with the Wizard and the other people he called in or came to see him-and then all she felt was pain. Pain worse than the Wizard ever gave her.

She cried and cried, silently begging for an end-and then it stopped. It stopped. There was an ache, something new.

Something new-her back felt weird. An extra weight. She didn’t know what it was.

And she looked around. Her friends had something weird, and she touched it. It moved away, and her friend whirled around to glare.

Someone else touched her back but not. She felt it move, wind brushing past her, and she watched her companions (friends, made through their mutual hatred of the Wizard), and she watched them climb, learning to use these new things.

(“Wings,” something in her said. She trusted that voice.)

And the covers came off-she saw the Wizard-and she hated him. She wanted him dead-like he wanted her, her friends.

They’re on the bars, trying to get out, still trying to climb out. She accepted she couldn’t escape.

“Let them go!” She saw a powerful woman-dark dress clinging to her like a cloak-and she wished she’d free them.

The Wizard, dark and imposing, ordered for her capture. She hoped the woman got away.

The cage flew open suddenly, and she and her companions surged out, flying away from the Wizard. Their wings worked, worked hard to move them away, and she fell in love with flying.

Freedom and happiness were at her fingertips, but she didn’t know how to get it. Working with the woman who freed them-the woman who gave them the wings to leave-she could agree with.

She managed to convey her idea to follow that woman-and they agreed.

She flew in the front of the group, trying to find a hint of the woman-she found her with the Wizard’s companion (the man with dark green hair that always came when the Wizard called). She and her group hovered, watching and waiting for a time to approach her.

She found her at a beautiful building. They approached her, in her grief, and she accepted their companionship.

“Sui,” she said. (She was Kaori, a wonderful woman, unlike that man.)

Sui took to the name. Sui took off and found the girl she wanted. The silver slippers gleamed in the sun, bright and blinding, and she and her friends followed. It was too easy to grab the girl and leave-her companions didn’t care enough to fight.

Sui dropped her off before flying off to watch the girl’s companions.

The scarecrow gave her something-told her to give it to Kaori. She took it.

(The name Ryoma didn’t ring any bells, but he looked familiar. A forgotten person or a forgotten time.)

Sui saw Kaori with a beautiful woman-Takane-and she knew her from her time with him that she’s a part of his group.

She flew off after giving Kaori the note-to watch the scarecrow. She didn’t stay to hear what the note holds.

Sui is there when she melts, dies, and she flew off with her friends. There’s nothing left but the world-and she then heard of Takane’s acts, giving them rights taken away from the Wizard.

Talking… the thought was enough to get her to go back to learn. She would’ve loved to tell Kaori “thank you.”
