AN: I vaguely remember some comments about the justice system in Japan, so part of it is shown in here. Other parts I made up or I based off America.

She could remember the way his hand wrapped around her throat. She could remember the almost soft caress against her side as he forced himself on her. But she never knew what he looked like. He made sure to stand behind her, whispering obscene things that made her flush just thinking about it even now.

However, she wasn’t supposed to think about the attack years ago. She wasn’t supposed to dwell on whether or not she wanted it-she still wasn’t sure, despite the reassurance of others that her body would react to stimuli despite her not wanting it.

She had to confront a situation that she knew about in the back of her mind-the state of the police and their convictions. She had to deal with sending an innocent man to jail all those years ago because he had the same build as the man that had held her down.

Mari didn’t know if she would be able to face him. The last time she saw him was in the court, where she told those that she had been assaulted-that word left a bitter taste in her mouth at that time-by him. She didn’t remember his name, but she remembered the people who supported him.

She could see that man with wavy blue hair staring at her, almost as if he was looking into her soul. Mari always felt a bit creeped out when she met his gaze. Next to him was another man who always kept his eyes closed. Despite it being emotional for everyone involved, he seemed too serene.

But he also made her feel unsettled.

The rest of the men with those two were fairly normal-angry at her or him, she wasn’t sure, but understandable.

But the uncomfortableness she’d be feeling meeting them again wouldn’t make up for the five years she made him spend in jail. She couldn’t give him back the years that he lost-and she couldn’t remove it from his records.

She had asked as soon as she heard about how they (she) jailed an innocent man, but she was only told that it’d stick with him “just in case”. Mari easily read between the lines and realized that the police force didn’t care about this man and only about their image.

She couldn’t understand why they were bothering with releasing him when it would be so easy to cover it up.

At least until she read the latest on this case. The name Yukimura Seiichi and Yanagi Renji stood out like sore thumbs-and she realized those were the two men that had been making her feel uncomfortable. They were notorious amongst those in the red-light district. Two men that ruled the Yakuza with an iron fist.

They took over around five years ago.

If they take her, she might feel like she paid for her crimes against an innocent man. And she could live with that. If taking her and punishing her made up for the years he spent in prison being accused of a crime he didn’t commit, then she’d accept it.

Because, honestly, there was nothing she could say to him. She could try to rationalize it with him, but it’d only be excuses for jumping the gun when she knew-subconsciously-that he wasn’t the one that held her all those years ago.

But at least there would be friends to take care of him. There was a small comfort in that-and she also felt guilty for feeling bad about herself when he was the one who’d be suffering from looks of distrust and disgust.

Mari didn’t think much about it until she saw him smiling at that blue-haired man (Yukimura.) He looked happy from what little she could see, and she could see that he was devoted to his friend.

She could see the effects of the stress her accusation had on him. He was thinner than she remembered, and she could see his face had aged-not that she knew exactly what he’d look like had he not been in jail.

She wanted to go over and say something (“sorry”), but Mari didn’t know how she could apologize, not even after agonizing over it for the week that led up to his release. She could only watch from the side as he was taken from the police’s hold and released to his friends.

He turned around and saw her-and she watched his expression become closed. His friend-Yukimura-also noticed and he gave her a sweet smile that promised pain and misery if she ever stepped close to Sanada ever again.
