Candy Store". I might also turn this into a 'verse.
Seraphina didn’t think highly of anyone in her dorms-they were obnoxious with their bragging of blood status. She knew she was a half-blood, unlike her dormmates, but Seraphina hated that they spouted blood purity rhetoric in front of her. They insulted her constantly, stating that it’s because she’s a half-blood witch that she has misfortune.
(And a part of her considered that-if her mother hadn’t run away, if her mother hadn’t burnt all her bridges… But there was no point in dwelling on “what ifs”.)
“Look here, girls. Snape is all by herself.”
She recognized the sickeningly sweet voice. It was irritating, the way she managed to have boys fall at her feet and girls sigh in wonderment. If she had to admit it to herself-she never would-Seraphina would’ve thought she was envious of Max.
“Leave,” she hissed angrily.
Seraphina thought she saw something like interest flash in Max’s too blue eyes, but then it narrowed in anger.
“Who do you think you are, half-blood,” she spat. “Ordering me around like you’re somebody.”
Selwyn looked at her in interest, those dark brown eyes staring at her as if she was an object instead of a person. It was more disturbing than getting Max’s unwelcomed attention. “She might be useful.”
“How?”
She grinned, and said, “Snape here is good at potions. A Ravenclaw if you ask me. She doesn’t belong in here, an outcast, but we could help her fit in. Make her desirable to anyone she chooses.”
“For a boon.”
Seraphina watched them warily as they circled her. She didn’t want to owe them anything-her pride wouldn’t let her accept any handouts-and the boon was something she didn’t want hanging over her.
“Look, girls. She’s afraid,” Max cooed mockingly. “She might start crying soon.”
Tripe laughed. In Seraphina’s opinion, she was the perfect follower-she had no brains, and she did as she was told without questioning it. It disgusted her.
“Maybe we should-”
“Let me finish!” Max appraised her. “We could make you attractive to the boys,” she murmured.
Seraphina had her wand out, aimed at Max as she touched her face. It made her queasy, feeling this girl’s hand caress her face. “Ex-”
“You don’t want to do that,” Max hissed. She sounded dangerous, so different from her sweet voice that made people underestimate her. It was at this moment that Seraphina understood how terrifying Max could be.
“What do you want,” she asked, a small hint of desperation bleeding into her voice. She winced internally but didn’t betray her emotional turmoil outwardly.
“Help us when we need it, and we’ll help you out with the Slytherins,” Max said. “Or… of course, you could run to your mudblood and beg her for help.”
Seraphina looked at them carefully, trying to find a hole she could exploit to get out of the situation. She knew she could easily take Tripe down, but both Selwyn and Max could give her a problem-and together, she had no chance against them.
“What do you want me to do,” she asked, careful to not say if she would help them or not.
“Just things here and there,” Max said carelessly. She shrugged, giving off an air of nonchalance.
It made her even more nervous. Seraphina was aware of what Max and her cohorts were capable of, so them needing her help was a bit daunting.
Tripe couldn’t keep her mouth shut. “I thought-”
“Shut up, Tripe!” Max snapped. Seraphina would never admit it to anyone, least of all Max, but she was terrifying when she was angry.
She cowered, and Max smiled winningly at Seraphina.
“Will you let me think about it?” she asked warily. She might have sounded calm, but Seraphina was anything but.
“Of course! Just let me know your answer by tonight.”
The three girls sauntered away, and Seraphina let out a sigh. She had a choice to make, and she needed to make it soon. It was either ignore Max’s orders and lose any hope of gaining the respect of the Slytherin House or agree to comply with Max and lose her friendship with Lily for being friends (and that made her shudder) with a pureblood supremacist.
