Notes: A bit of an AU for another Germany/Japan fic. Set in the same place, but different "confession" scenes. I have to work on that.
As Ludwig came upon Kiku, who looked elated for some reason, he couldn’t help but feel dread. It had been a week since he had confessed (unintentionally), and he didn’t want to deal with the repercussions, especially since he valued Kiku as a friend too.
“Ludwig, I’m glad to have caught you,” he said in Ludwig’s native language. Absently, he noted that Kiku’s skill in German had improved greatly, or maybe it was that he never actually paid any attention to it until this moment.
“Ah, hello Kiku,” he replied in Japanese-it was rusty, considering the fact that he rarely used it now, but he was pleased to have remembered that much.
“I wanted to say… I think I like you too.” Ludwig nearly fell from shock-Kiku was never this forward with his feelings, often veiling what he said in vague words and an apathetic tone.
“It’s all right if you don’t return my feelings-I won’t hold it against you.”
“No! It’s… it’s that you seem to shine in public, when we’re with other people. I can’t do that. I can’t open up to anyone but my family and you.” Kiku was looking at his feet by now, and Ludwig could tell that he was blushing slightly.
“That’s not completely wrong, but I’m not one to speak in public. I only speak when I’m shouting at my brother to stop doing whatever it is that he decided to do.” Ludwig sighed, trying to come up with a way to say what he wanted to say.
“Thank you for that Ludwig,” Kiku replied before walking away.
As he did, Ludwig finally came up with the words he was struggling to form. In the deserted halls, he whispered, “You shine more than I do. You stand out more than I do. You’re like a sun, making everyone else gravitate towards you. In a way, Kiku, I envy you, but I love you more.”
