Summary: Joseph (JGL) sets Ellen and Zooey to meet each other. Afterwards, Ellen makes it into a romantic evening of dancing.
Disclaimer: I do not own anyone, Zooey, Ellen or JGL. It's all from my imagination.
Author's note: I magically wrote this in a few days. It probably still needs some work but I decided to post it anyways. I really hope you enjoy it though. There needs to be more fics of Ellen/Zooey I think. Also, I want to thank my dear friend Allie and dedicate this to her. And my girlfriend Sadia for giving me song ideas and such. :)
Ellen swatted her hand at the beeping alarm clock in frustration and attempted to sit upright. A tide of tiredness flushed through her head and she groaned. She definitely wasn’t a morning person. Despite her morning fatigue-ness, she proceeded to turn on the record player on her night table.
The corners’ scratched a bit as it began to play but the sound rang loud and clear. It was a Beatles song. A good one. “Good day, Sunshine!” Zooey tapped her feet to the melody in joy. Her pajamas were baggy and girly. She danced herself across the room and went to the bathroom to take a morning shower.
Prodding at her hair, Ellen stood up and gathered the clothes she wanted to wear that day. Sorting through the drawers, she hummed the ‘I feel good, in a special way. I’m in love and it’s a sunny day’ part to herself as she found the perfect outfit. Then she headed down the hall of her apartment and glanced at herself in the mirror.
A tired but happy woman was looking back at herself. She grinned and sang along with the song as she combed her hair a bit, sorted out her makeup and headed straight for the warm shower that was awaiting her.
She stripped of her clothes to leave her bare androgyny body staring blankly at her. Afterwards, she slid into the cold water of the shower that pounded on her body and left the vague lyrics of ‘Then we lie, beneath a shady tree. I love her and she’s loving me’ behind.
“Good day, Sunshine!” Zooey could probably be heard by several of her neighbors with her loud combination of singing and yelling. When the water stopped, the melody continued and Zooey sang with passion at she finished up and dragged a towel from the rack nearby. And when she stepped out, the air around her tightened and she continued.
“Good day, Sunshine!” Ellen’s voice fell flat on the note but she continued on singing and ringing out her voice. Through the coarse water, she could barely hear some of the song. So she brought the pressure down a little, only to find herself squirming to turn it back up.
By the last ‘Good day, Sunshine’, Zooey had her neat clothes on and she was already blow drying her hair as fast as she could. Something about today made her feel giddy and nice. She hummed a bit of the song that she could remember and finished up the last touches of her makeup.
Ellen was still tired and sulky this morning. As she rubbed her body with the soft towel she glanced in the mirror only to find her wet reflection staring back her. “Hey.” She said with a gruff voice, “What’re you looking at?” Then she stepped into her clothes and stumbled out of the bathroom.
--
The phone rang obnoxiously. Zooey pattered her way to get it, almost tripping on her new dress. She picked up and almost sung the word, "Hello?"
"Hey." She responded to the scratchy voice of someone she knew. One of her good friends. "You want me to what? Meet you at a coffee shop? Why?"
"You want me to meet someone? That's very sweet of you, but I've got some plans of my own." There was a pause and the begging and pleading of her friend could be heard through the phone.
Finally, Ellen gave in. "Okay, yeah, sure. I'll go meet that 'someone' if you insist. But you've gotta know I have a scheduled time. I'm not always free. Well, you probably know that too."
Zooey didn't know this, but she was lured into the exact same plan. She grinned and did a twirl in her dress. This was the first time in a long time that she actually got to go out and hang around at a coffee shop to make a new friends and chat. Usually she didn’t like basking around at coffee shops but maybe today would be different.
The next few minutes consisted of Ellen buzzing around the room. Turning off her record player, finishing fixing her hair and cleaning up her messes. Then she threw on a little gray cardigan over her white shirt, tugged at her tie and jogged on the spot with her old shoes.
She was ready. Her black vintage dress with a lace stripe-pattern at the neck hung beautifully on her simple body. The arms of the dress were cut off at the shoulders, so it was perfect for this spring morning. She puckered her bright red lips and kissed the mirror.
With hands in her pockets and her satchel at her side, Ellen strutted down the sidewalk whistling another Beatles tune. She found the bike rack and waved at a group of people across the street that were jumping up and down at the sight of her. She unlocked her teal bike from the rack and mounted it.
Zooey on the other hand didn't want to ride her bike in high heels. Instead, she took her time and strolled down the alleys and walkways to the beat of a small band that was playing a few blocks away. Many people looked at her curiously or merrily and she tried to be as nice as she could to the passersby.
The coffee shop that the man had talked about wasn't too far away. Ellen could vaguely hear the sounds of a band in the background. She was pleased with this and let the morning sunshine soak into her body. She started to sweat but ignored it. Hopefully this trip was worth it. It seemed such a good day, hopefully nothing bad would come of it.
She clenched the door of the shop open and swung herself inside. The first thing she did was look around for her friend. All she saw were strangers ordering coffee, chatting, reading newspapers and doing all the normal things that normal people did. Nothing strange. But she wasn’t sure as to whom she was supposed to meet.
Ellen locked her bike, entered through the back door and looked around nervously. A spark glinted in her eye as she caught sight of a beautiful woman that she recognized. With a bit of hesitation, she stepped up to her.
"Hey!" Zooey had a grand smile planted on her face.
They shook hands both with anxious smiles.
"I actually came here to meet someone, but I'm happy to see you." Ellen blurted out.
"I came here to meet someone as well."
"Wait... do you think someone set us up?"
"Did you get a call from Joseph this morning as well? Maybe that was just me."
"Joseph? You think Joseph did this?"
"Well, he was always the jokester.”
“Yeah. I’m pretty sure he was up to this, somehow.”
They stood on edge, waiting for the crowd of people in front of them to pass by.
"Zooey?" Ellen asked as she tried to scoot closer to her friend.
"Yes?"
"I know doing things in coffee shops isn’t really your thing, it isn’t mine either. Would you like to go somewhere else?"
"Well, I do like coffee shops. But most of the time it isn’t my thing. I even made a list of '
20 great excuses for not getting anything done while at a coffee shop' one day. It would be nice to go somewhere else though. But not right now. Perhaps later this evening if you aren't too busy. I have a meeting soon and I only had a few minutes to squeeze this little visit in."
“Sure.” Ellen said while nodding quickly.
She stood on her tiptoes and pecked Zooey's cheek rapidly.
"What was that for?"
"I was just kissing you goodbye for now. That's all. I'll see you this evening then? Around 7:00 at my hotel, maybe?"
"Mhmm.” Zooey replied as Ellen wrote down the address on a napkin, sliding it over to Zooey.
Then Ellen closed her eyes and turned her face a bit, expecting a kiss from Zooey. Surprisingly, she did feel a kiss. A kiss on her smile.
When she opened her eyes, she stared at Zooey blankly in the eye.
The keen smirk on her face was adorable and mischievous.
"Have a good day now." Zooey replied all bubbly.
She sort of skipped off into the distance and Ellen was stood there in awe. She really hadn't expected Zooey to be that type of person. But it was still quite nice to have a new friend. It felt like something new had been thumb-tacked into her heart.
--
Zooey now felt exhausted. It was 5 o'clock and the watch at her wrist seemed to make every moment slower and slower. The meetings she already had with producers and screenwriters were already tiring. But now to have a two hour long conversation with several of her other friends and other songwriters was a bit too much. All she wanted was to sleep or relax.
Meanwhile, Ellen did the things she wanted through an almost empty day. She had planned to have lunch with some of her other good friends. Then she spent the other half of her day riding her bike down parks and squawking at ducks who were trying to drown other ducks.
When Zooey finally got home, she looked at her silver watch. The minute hand inched slowly and the second hand whirred around like crazy. She rubbed her forehead with a soft hand. Then she got off her bed and looked in her closet for some dresses. She wanted a fancy one when she was going to see Ellen again. Zooey placed it on the dresser and took a nap before doing anything else.
She locked up her bike again and gazed at the sky. The blanket of dark gooey gray was already starting to spread across the sky. Ellen had a plan. She knew that her hotel was setting up a special night. They offered a free service of food and snacks after 6. So, Ellen had planned to surprise Zooey with a little evening of romantic dancing and a small dinner to help them take their minds off things.
--
That's exactly what Zooey needed. And even as she woke up, she still felt worn-out. But she got herself up and changed into a simple, warm cream-coloured dress that went down to her knees with jet black tights and glossy coal heels to match. Then she tied her hair back and slipped on a small white cardigan to keep herself warm.
Ellen busied herself with ordering the exact food she wanted and making the room well. She needed to pick the best songs to dance to and the best romantic things to make the room seem nice. Ellen wanted to make a good first impression on Zooey but didn't want to scare her off too much with all the sappy, romantic things she could do.
Zooey arrived early. She didn't want to wait any longer though. Spending time with Ellen felt like it would be the best possible thing to do right now. It would relieve stress, talking about certain things, maybe even listening. Holding her knuckle up, she knocked. No one answered. Then she realized the door was ajar, so she cautiously worked her way into the room.
Ellen stood in the shadows of the room, waiting for Zooey as she looked around suspiciously. Her vague ‘Hello?’ could barely be heard. The candles wafted around the room and let the vanilla scent roam about. Ellen finally decided to find Zooey. She smiled at her and took off her cardigan for her.
"Have you had dinner?" Ellen asked carefully.
Zooey shook her head but grinned when Ellen took her hand and led her to a corner where there was a table where a lot of nice-looking food was piled. Ellen was such a nice girl. She cared about people and made them feel welcome. But maybe a romantic dinner wasn't the beginning of a normal friendship, Zooey wondered. Something was strange about this but she kept her opinions to herself and ate as she listened to Ellen talk about her day a bit.
--
Ellen paused for a few minutes and glanced at Zooey who was still devouring the sweet little cupcakes that they had for desserts. She seemed tired. You could barely see it through her makeup and fresh face, but she was really exhausted and Ellen knew that.
The rough fabric of the blazer that Ellen had switched into while eating ran along her wrist. Ellen's hand was wrapped around Zooey's forearm in comfort. Zooey glanced away from her food for a second and directly into Ellen's eyes.
"Would you like to dance, Zooey?" It was a simple question and Ellen would take any answer. Dancing was never really her thing, but she knew that it was definitely Zooey's. And maybe she could learn a little something or two from her friend.
"Sure, if you want to." Zooey placed the tiny wrapper of the cupcake in her plate and whisked down a gulp of wine before standing up. Ellen was ahead of her already, standing over her record player. She wondered what music she was putting on. She hoped to god that they had a somewhat similar music taste.
'Girlfriend in a Comma' by The Smiths started to play and Zooey began to giggle. Ellen was really a sweetheart. Zooey then started to do a silly dance as she got closer to Ellen. They danced crazily for a while to the song, giggling and smirking all the way through. It was a fun, friendship moment that she wanted to remember.
Ellen was the type of girl to flail her arms and wave her head around while dancing. While Zooey was more of the woman who tapped her feet to the beat, twirled around and made up her dance moves on the way. They mimicked the words to each other and had a little dance-off.
When the song ended, another started. This time it was 'Asleep' by The Smiths. It was a much sadder, slower pace. Like something you would slow dance to. Ellen and Zooey made eye contact for a while, sinking in the beat.
Zooey's elvish features flickered from the candlelight and she took a step forwards. Ellen did the same, reaching her hand out for Zooey to place hers on it. They were sucked in closer and before they knew it, they were stepping in rhythm magically.
Ellen was a bit shorter than Zooey, which made them an odd couple. But it was nice, dancing together. She looked up at Zooey who gave Ellen the tiniest smirk. The dimple on her cheek then made Ellen's stomach flutter timidly.
Zooey realized how much she adored Ellen in this moment. She had only met her this morning and yet, she had fallen in love with her. It was so easy too. Maybe too easy. Ellen’s slick hair fell perfectly on her neck and shoulders as she took each step carefully, hoping that she wouldn’t step on Zooey’s heels. She seemed so awkward but it was the most adorable thing.
It was already nearing the end of the song. The women were now glancing at each other's lips in wonder. Each flaw was a perfection that the other adored. Then Ellen swooped Zooey in a different direction, towards the bed. Her eyebrows raised and as the last tiny whispers of the song drowned out, she was lowered to the bed with an explosive kiss.
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
