The ending goes a little something like this:
A hotel room in the Upper East Side with tangled sheets and limbs, sedated sighs. If you asked her, she would tell you, with all the honesty should could manage, that they never, ever planned on taking it this far. An affair is an affair no matter which way you spin it, but an affair of the heart, well, let’s just say she knew better.
Lily always has.
The diamonds of her engagement ring glitter in the moonlight, and she curls her fist around the railing of the balcony until she can’t see it anymore, until all she can see is her knuckles, pear white as they hold on. She breathes a breath for her children, her husband, and sighs something tired, something so utterly exhausted in the same beat. Hindsight is twenty-twenty, she knows, and knowing what she knows now brings the most blinding sort of clarity.
Walking down that aisle a year ago seems to have been the start down this downward spiral she’s found herself permanently stuck in.
Lily knows he is there without actually seeing him. Hears the soft pad in his footsteps, feels his presence, sure and certain, and lets it press into her shoulders. When she turns her head over her shoulder, sure enough, he’s standing in the doorway with the most peculiar look spread across his face.
She smiles softly, the corner of her mouth curving upwards just slightly. He comes up behind her, arms wrapping around her waist and she easily slides backwards, into his embrace, comforted, calmed.
Lily closes her eyes and breathes him in.
Still the same after all these years.
“I can do this anymore, Lil. Not like this,” he says softly after a long beat, his voice hoarse, the rumbling vibrating against her back and settling somewhere deep.
“Yeah,” she breathes. “I know.”
