The house was dark, silent, almost menacing, when I let myself in. I dismissed the shiver up my spine. Damian, Micah and Nathaniel were working and would be home in a few hours. But instead of relishing my own space, I was unaccountably lonely. It wasn’t that long ago when the only living things in my home were fish. But they had an aversion to having their tank shot up and they died. And I moved. To a house too far away for neighbors to panic about gunshots in the night. Or through the door. I flipped on lights as I walked to the bedroom. Nathaniel had made the bed. Neat but not military. Nathaniel didn’t change the sheets as often as Jean-Claude, but he enjoyed clean, smooth sheets after years of not having either. In the center, where I slept, lay Sigmund. He always seemed to know when I would need him. I crawled over and hugged him close. His soft fur tickled my skin and reminded me of Nathaniel’s braid and Micah’s curls. Once this was all I had, all I wanted. I would have sworn I was content. How much I had learned of love since then.
