I hate blackberries. But I couldn’t be so churlish as to deprive Jean-Claude of the treat made in his honor. Nathaniel had whipped up a batch of blackberry ice cream as a thank you. Jean-Claude never minded when Nathaniel shared the bed. I had unpacked the frozen confection, scooped it into a bowl, added a little chocolate sauce and opened the marks between us. I savored the first spoonful as he had taught me to do, rolling the melting sweet around my mouth like one would do with a fine wine. The fresh berries burst across my tongue while the chocolate made them palatable. Jean-Claude’s shock was palpable, and was quickly followed by delight and then almost sensual pleasure as I licked another spoonful. The images he sent me of other nights, other blackberries, almost staggered me in their intensity. He didn’t remember much from when he was human but certain sensations had left an indelible mark. It wasn’t only the taste of food he missed; it was the texture. Jean-Claude is a very tactile vampire and I didn’t think that was solely because of the ardeur. “I am here, ma petite,” he warned. The door burst open. I shivered.
