He felt the spark that was ma petite flare and extinguish. He excused himself with almost indecent haste and made his way through the crowd toward his office. She wasn't dead couldn't be dead, but something was very wrong. He knew what she had been doing. Could feel her pleasure energizing him, all of them. He didn't begrudge Asher this time with her. Didn't begrudge him the feeling of her body, the sweet taste of her blood. The door to his office stood open, the copper tang almost overwhelming against his tongue as he approached. She lay, pale and lifeless, on the sofa, coated in crimson fluid. It had soaked through the corset. The stain on the sofa spreading before his eyes. He had never felt so helpless. Asher stared at Anita with anguish-filled eyes. Two guards, werehyenas both, held him, but whether they were keeping him from Anita or merely keeping him upright was unclear. Dr. Lillian raced into the room, took one look at the tableau before her and began issuing orders. He watched her look at Asher, bathed in Anita's blood and other fluids, and watched Asher look away, radiating shame and regret. What had they done?
