I first read this in The Week and I just remembered now to check up on it and apparently it got into today's State News. Beaner's coffee is changing their name because "beaner" can be a derogatory term against latinos. I both love Beaner's and knew of the term "beaner" (I learned from Carlos Mencia) but I never connected the two in my head. One is

hahah, it does. That's what I'm saying! This is an MSU coffee place so place out some fricking ballots or something. It'll be cheaper than having it done professionally (maybe they just did it internally). Of course I guess MSU isn't the problem, no one would want to change the name. You get to the states with a clash of latinos and other Americans in the border states and those are the people who they're changing it for.

UGH! And I'm glad you feel that way about Carlos Mencia - at first I was like hahah, it mocks everyone and I like that but then no, he is just stupid and racist. He may say he mocks people because you have to laugh at yourself but he does it because he is racist. Joe Rogan almost beat him down once! And got banned from the Comedy Store for it (political decision) apparently comics call him "Carlos Mensteala" because he rips off other comics including greats like Richard Pryor. Mencia also treats his audiences like crap. He has that schik where he tells a joke and then mocks part of the audience (usually a nonexistent section) for looking at him blankly and "not getting it" so they he's like "Some of you didn't get it DEDEDE (or whatever the hell the noise is)" and then retells in it slower form. ARGH. YOUR AUDIENCE WAS LAUGHING THAT IS WHY THEY WERE IN YOUR AUDIENCE BECAUSE THEY THINK YOU ARE FUNNY

I love Carlos isn't even his real name - I guess he thought he had to hispanUP his routine's image. His real name is like, Edward.

Anyway, if you want to go for insult humor there are much better comedians who do it.

And I also thought he was the one that spread around beaner but apparently it is common in western parts of the country, at least that is what a bunch of people said who also moved on over here and witnessed BEANER'S coffee.

I did make peace with it last night (not that I'm going to stop calling it Beaner's) but better we think they're stupid now for changing their name than for them to look stupid later on for having that name when some jackhole is suing them for defamation and emotional pain.

People were giving this restaurant chain called "Sambo's" as a point why Beaner's should change the name. I think it was before my time but these resturaunts' name was based on some folk story that whitey made up about darkie native folk or something and Sambo was a stereotypical dumb happy go lucky black native and eventually the restuarant got sued, boycotted, and finally changed the name but they were too late for damage control.

BUT the major difference is that Sambo's wasn't just some name or named for a piece of food served they actually used this story as the decorating theme for their restaraunts including stereotypical art of these racist characters and other stuff. Beaner's is about coffee. The don't have a logo of Juan Valdez or drunk mexicans or something as the logo (It is a "big b") or even serve a single frijole! COFFEE BEAN

The smart kind of race humour mocks widely-held stereotypes. He merely mocks people /using/ stereotypes. At least that is my perception.

I heard about him basically stealing his act... but then, you'd think he'd be better, wouldn't you?
