so i wrote a leetle something about abortion yesterday, because of a sick and twisted and un-cool bulletin i saw posted on a friend's myspace. let my mom read it and she wanted my dad/her friends/stalin and his knitted booties to read it, therefore i am posting it!
so if you're anti-abortion/anti-choice, i...don't know why youre on my flist :D but you can discuss in the comments! and i do say, blame a lot of this on misslydiadeets, because it's her fault i'm so pro-choice. since august, god dammit.
"id very much like to do some bad things to every one of you who've reposted that bulletin with the pictures of the fetuses and the quarters, stating that abortion is sick and wrong and that it's murder. fuck that. abortion is not wrong. grabbing disgusting pictures from rotten.com and calling it evidence, THAT is wrong. a LEGAL and SAFE abortion is NOT available to women in many, many places of the united states. 88% of the counties in the united states have NO abortion provider. in less populated areas, that 88% percent goes to 97% percent. lets go over some basic information.
FACT. of teenage women who become pregnant, about 35% choose to have an abortion rather than bear a child. why? because if that 17 year old has the child, she is SIGNIFICANTLY more like to drop out of school, have INADEQUATE prenatal care, rely on public assistance to raise her child, develop health problems and/or have her marriage/relationships end in divorce. children born to teenage mothers are more likely than children of older mothers to suffer significant disadvantages: medical, psychological, economic, and educational.
MYTH: abortions are unsafe and performed in unclean conditions, with a higher death rate of the parent than child birth. in Roe vs. Wade, the supreme court legalized abortion UNTIL VIABILITY, the point at which the fetus is capable of surviving outside the women's body. after viability, Roe allows states to BAN ABORTION except when necessary to protect the women's life or health. abortion is medically safe and less expensive than is generally thought, you know. today, women who want abortions can select WELL-TRAINED, COMPASSIONATE MEDICAL PERSONNEL, who work in CLEAN, WELL-EQUIPPED OFFICES, CLINICS OR HOSPITALS in places which allow/offer it. the danger of serious complications is EXTREMELY SMALL. 0.6 out of 100,000 abortions result in death while 13 out of 100,000 live births result in death.
FACT: MAKING ABORTION ILLEGAL DOES NOT REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ABORTIONS. 20 million of the 46 million abortions performed annually are ILLEGAL AND UNSAFE. legalization of abortion can PREVENT UNNECESSARY DEATH and suffering of women. there are approximately 80,000 deaths each year are due to infection, hemorrhages, uterine injury and the toxic effects of agents taken to abort a child. why? because they are UNABLE to have PROPER, SAFE MEDICAL TREATEMENT and must put themselves in a great deal of danger to go through with the procedure themselves.
MYTH: women have abortions for selfish or frivolous reasons. the decision to have an abortion is NEVER simple. the majority of women base their decisions on different factors, such as: LACK OF MONEY, PREVIOUSLY EXISTING RESPONSIBILITIES, and UNREADINESS TO EXPAND THEIR FAMILIES. many of those women also feel that the more responsible thing to do would be to wait until they were better suited to raise a child in a proper environment with two supportive parents. 66% of women who have women who have abortions plan to have children when they are older. other reasons for abortion include: MEDICAL PROBLEMS, learning that the fetus had SEVERE ABNORMALITIES and would have led a suffering-filled life, or had a pregnancy interrupted by A PERSONAL CRISIS. about 13,000 women each year have abortions because they have become pregnant as a result of RAPE OR INCEST.
don't give me any of the shit about murdering a full-grown human being, either. almost 90% of abortions in the U.S. are performed during the FIRST 12 WEEKS of pregnancy. in fact, over half of all abortions are obtained within the first 8 weeks. fewer than 2% occur at 21 weeks or later. it is KNOWN FOR SURE that an embryo or fetus CANNOT FEEL PAIN in the 99% of ALL ABORTIONS that occur BEFORE THE 20TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY. it's possible that a fetus is unable to feel pain at any time during pregnancy, and if a fetus IS able to feel pain before birth and consciousness, it is likely to happen only AFTER THE 28TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY, when abortion is limited for urgent medical reasons only.
in NEW YORK STATE: 42 percent of counties have no abortion provider. governor George Pataki is mixed-choice. lieutenant governor Mary Donohue is pro-choice. attorney general Eliot Spitzer is pro-choice. the New York House is pro-choice. the New York Senate is mixed-choice. the New York democratic party supports a woman's right to choose. the New York republican party's position on a woman's right to choose is unknown.
religions in support of a woman's right to choose include: the Episcopal Church, United Church of Christ, Unitarian Universalist Association, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Methodist Church, and Conservative and Reform Judaism. only 22% of U.S. Catholics agree that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances.
YOU CAN BE PRO-CHOICE, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT PRO-ABORTION. just because YOU would not have an abortion does NOT mean that EVERY WOMAN IN THE UNITED STATES should be limited to unsafe and highly dangerous procedures, or giving birth to an unwanted child that will possibly grow up in an INADEQUATE ENVIRONMENT.
the issue of abortion is not only about aborting a fetus. it comes head-to-head with the VALUE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY. should women make their OWN decisions about their lives, families and careers, or should the GOVERNMENT do that for them? should a woman have the option of deciding when she wants to have children, or if she wants to at all, or should the GOVERNMENT make that decision?
basically, if youre a female with anti-abortion, anti-choice views and can't see why i'm PRO-choice, i'd like to think you'll politely FUCK OFF now. how DARE you? you are betraying your OWN rights as a female in this country and around the world. as a very smart friend of mine once said: "Do you have fucking ovaries?
