LSD and "flash backs" aside, an ancient Samauri or Ninja would not attempt to alter the nature of the mind. Breathing in through the mouth, so slowly as to make no sound and then breathing out through the nose, again noiselessly, kept one awake and aware. Breathing in and out through the mouth or nose only, leads on to the edge of (and sometimes into) unawareness or sleep. The type of meditation where one endeavors to drop-out of reality was not their goal.
Keeping the eyes and ears open to natural sounds (and the unnatural such as the twang of a bow string), and sights (again, natural and man-made) allows one to be totally aware of life. To be a peace with one's self and all around made supreme relaxation, the entry-way to complete self. There was no fear; neither death or life. A clear and relaxed mind, yet as sharp and aware as any other natural animal. Peace was the result.
As one who graduated in 1963, I have first-hand knowledge of the so-called Peace Movement of the Hippies and their attempt to find reality within altered consciousness.
Proper diet, good exercise, faith in one's beliefs and one's self, added to "true peace" and the relaxation of that peace. There is an ancient writing that says "in whatsoever situation one is in, therein, be content".
I'm not saying you can't have your "pharmaceutical soup" (store bought or home made), the way you want it, just give me pure water, natural food, and pleasant exercises for both mind and body. :o)
