i forgot to mention that the appointment at columbia college last week went VERY well! i picked up the information needed to begin the process of applying to the school. i picked up the undergraduate materials, financial aid materials, and a course catalog. i found out that if i go back and get a second batchelor's degree, i won't have to take stupid general education requirements, which means that i'll be able to finish up my degree sooner (thank god, i don't think i could've dealt with anymore intro to [insert name of subject here] classes...i about poked my eye out from all of those intro classes at UNL).
my personal goal: to begin going back to school the spring of '06. i have a lot of reading ahead of me...and a lot of deciphering to do...but this seems like a very viable option for me to pursue. i talked with this kid (jared...he's on myspace so i added him...i tell ya' EVERYONE'S on myspace) who grew up on the same block i did back home about full sail (he went there in 2001)...and he said it's a great school, but the sound recording majors sometimes have problems finding jobs after they graduate from that school. i am not for certain if it is that way all across the board...because i'm sure that different schools have different job markets they work off of, but who knows. he also said that because of full sail's rigorous schooling, you're not able to hold down a part-time job at all. apparently it's a 24 hour, 7 days a week school where your schedule changes monthly. so on top of paying out the ass to go to school there (he said his degree cost him like $35,000) he had to take out a loan for living expenses. i'm sure after all was said and done, he was probably $50,000 in debt...if not more. i, of course, didn't ask (it would've been rude)...but it gave me a good stepping stone to go off of in terms of choosing columbia over full sail.
i mean, columbia is in chicago...i'm sure they have excellent internships...and this time around, i'm extremely motivated to better myself and actually go BACK to school. if i could've done it over, i would've waited until i really knew what i wanted to do and then applied myself accordingly. my first degree hasn't gotten me anywhere...and probably won't unless i go to grad school for communication studies (bleh! i'd rather not). so after being out for 2+ years and after getting myself immersed in music technology via djing and such, i really think this will be a great vantage point to work off of.
here's to hoping, at least!
