Caught Up in the Rapture...in the Romance Novel Aisle

Dec 11, 2007 10:14

I got out of class early last night, so I decided to stop off at the Border's Books by my house.  It would have made more sense to go to Barnes & Noble, but I'm a former Border's employee therefore I have some misplaced sense of loyalty to the place.  Plus I have a Border's Visa, anyway...

I normally don't run evening errands, but I was all panicked about finishing my book and not having another one to read (although I'm the slowest reader in the world and the chance of that happening was slim to none.)  When I got there I checked the R&B CD section and I'm guessing that because this is one of the smaller stores, the result was a selection that was less than comprehensive.   After cursing their lack of early Luther Vandross, Bobby Womack, and other great soul singers, I headed over to the science fiction and romance area (they share an aisle) since that was the main purpose of me going there anyway.

It was there that I literally almost ran smack into Anita Baker.

She was talking (somewhat loudly) on her cell speaker phone.  Something to do with music (predictably), and looking like she really couldn't be bothered with much anything else.  The funny thing was, we both stopped in the science fiction/romance aisle, briefly scanned the shelves, and both kept it moving...like neither of us wanted to be spotted in that aisle!  LOL.

*Side note - I really have to get over that hang up, but after years of being a book snob and endlessly making fun of other people's book selections, it's hard for me to admit that I actually LIKE a lot of what is essentially the literary equivalent of Cheez Whiz.  Baby steps....

I couldn't get over how tiny she was.  She's a really petite lady.  Then for some reason I felt a twinge of guilt for not having any of her songs on my iPod, after all she is from Detroit.  If Kid Rock made the cut, surely Ms. Baker needs to be there somewhere.

So that was my celebrity sighting for the night.  When I circled back around to the romance aisle, it was thankfully empty and I was free to peruse at my leisure.    If Ms. Baker wasn't so busy talking on her cell, I might have worked up the courage to ask her for some recommendations.
