"Born Into Brothels"

Tonight's feature presentation was the surprisingly "depressing, but not as depressing as I initially thought" documentary "Born Into Brothels."  This film tells the story of a woman photographer living in the red light district in Calcutta, India.  This woman started photographing and filming the lives of the women and in the process became attached to the children living these lives of poverty and illegal trade.  The woman eventually ends up teaching the children in the brothel about photography.

It was really interesting to see how upbeat those children were and how thoughtful they were when considering their photo subjects.  Those children have such hard lives and such little hope, yet somehow they have managed to accept it and still find joy and happiness in their lives.  The images in the film were at once beautiful and disturbing.

The thing that I really took away from the film above all is how beautiful people in the world are and how beauty can be found equally in every social standing in life.  The other thing that I couldn't help but absorb is how people of color catch hell everywhere in the world.  It is so sad.

I hope some of those kids were able to make it out of that surrounding.

Suddenly, I feel the need to say a prayer of thanks, then go and kiss my own kid while he sleeps.
