Why Castiel's sudden jump from neutral player to ally and friend of team Winchester?

This is the reasons why Castiel, his characterization and relationship with the brothers have been frustrating me this season.  No screaming or ranting promise, just some puzzlement and me rambling a bit while trying to put the correct words on my problem with this:)

Lets just look at his actions on the show first.

Heh I didn't think anyone would read this long ramble, very impressed*g*

This sudden friendship and ally thing just seems conjured out of thin air and it just bugs the heck out of me. Sadly I must inform you that we will probably get a lot of Castiel for the rest of the season to. He is set to appear in 17 of the 22 episodes, I just hope they will keep his scenes short like in 5.01 and 5.02 and no more orgies or whorehouses plz.

Yeah I locked it cause I'd probably be ripped apart by the Minions if I posted this to Spn_heavymeta or something similar even though I'm tempted to:)

Feel free to share with your friend, I hope it helps her a bit.

Honey! You just explained what I don't like of this season. I loved Cas, I really did in season 4. He was misterious, funny (with his unhability to understand humans emotions), he seemed a bit lost sometimes but deep down he's a good man (well angel.) He was always threatening Dean. Even sometimes, as you said he seemed to be pulling the boys apart from each ohter. And that's how I love him. But in this season I'm liking him less and less everytime. His change in the relation with Dean, is starting to annoy me. Sam & Dean are the core of the show, not Dean & Castiel. I may sound like a Dean/Cas hater, but it's not the case. I loved it in the beginning but right now it seems dunno... fake maybe? So umm...yeah, I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who finds the new change of Cas irritating.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone with my problem with this and thank you for read this long ramble of mine:)

It really is frustrating how a character I mostly enjoyed in season 4 have been warped into something I just can't recognize. It just makes me blah about Castiel or whatever he has turned into now.

Hee, I was just saying the other day that I didn't find Castiel's personality shift from season 4 to season 5 very believable. I'm not complaining per se, because s4 Castiel was a dick, and I really, really hated him. But I like S5 loltastic Castiel, even though he seems OOC ( ... )

The writers certainly have given us some great Castiel crack already this season, but I think they should have waited with it until the character's new position was more and better established in canon. Now because of him changing sides so late in the game, the writers really need to be careful with how they use him at least to begin with. Crack is fun but it is seriously undermining what little characterization we have of Castiel so far, at least for me:)

And I think maybe some of Dean's "friendship" for Castiel is due to the fact that Castiel tried to help him save Sam at the end of 4.22. Sam's the most important thing Dean has, and if you try to help him save Sam, then you've done all you need to get into his good graces.)I agree that this would certainly go some way to make Dean trust him, but I still think Dean's jump from being angry and weary of the angel to call him outright "friend" in 5.01 is too big. It's not like Castiel have provided Dean with steady, trustworthy companionship throughtout even the last parts of season 4 ( ... )

I didn't find Dean saying "My friend Cas" that OOC personally because I did feel that Dean had come to like and respect Castiel in season 4. There were a few talks in season 4 where he opened up to Castiel more than he did Sam even, and I think that Castiel usually appearing next to Uriel early on helped a lot with creating the impression with Dean that Castiel was one of the nicer angels/an all right guy really. He even comes to Castiel's rescue against Alistiar in 410 ( ... )

Even after Castiel took Dean's side at the very end, Dean must still be able to remember the angel's other actions throughout season 4 and have a healthy dose of caution regarding Castiel until proven otherwise. It's like that writers want us to think that Castiel have been helping the brothers faithfully for months after 4.22, as I mentioned like Ruby did with Sam, but he hasn't. There is no relationship ( ... )

I think that Dean can actually respect Castiel for wanting to follow orders because that was a big motivation for Dean with his own father, and yet there were still times when Castiel took Dean's side and broke orders. For instance the time when Sam was trying to kill Lilath earlier in the year, and Castiel is rolling his eyes and trying to be subtle as he gives Dean ideas on how to handle it. I can't remember which episode it was now though...

AGREED. I knew there was something off about him this season but I just couldn't put my finger on it. This described it perfectly. I mean like wth? How are he and Dean suddenly BFFs? Maybe Dean hit his head or something because all Cas really did up till now was manipulate him (and Sam). You raised some really good points here. I don't really want Cas to be evil, but it would be a cool twist if he really did have his own agenda and we were all fooled. After all, these angels can do manipulation almost as well as demons can.

Great to hear you found some sense in this post cause like you I've been trying to put words on why season5!Castiel feels off to me.

The angels of season 4 have not given much reason for Sam or Dean to trust them and while Castiel were/is one of the more sympathetic ones and was conflicted about some of his orders, I find it weird how the brothers don't even act a little bit cautious and suspicious around him fx when he demands the necklace in 5.02 or how Dean trusts him enough to go hunting with him in 5.03.

I doubt we'll get some evil!Castiel, fun as that might be, but Castiel is still keeping a lot of secrets form both brothers, that he let Sam out of the panic room is definitely one I really think needs to be addressed before the character can be trusted. He needs to come clean.
