Sometimes, I like my line of work. As I have written in earlier entries, I have been a freelance cameraman for quite a few years. Often, its the mundane, like a news show or a corporate dinner where the CEO wants to see himself on a 16' high screen; other times its big-name charity events, the occasional reality show, large corporate blow outs with well-known bands, and concerts in medium to large venues.
Over the years, I have had a few whiz bang moments that are definitely in the "way cool" category (again, I reference an earlier, very long entry). Most of those are better than this - but this one is nostalgic.
Although they weren't my band of choice at the time (Triumph was), I had two Iron Maiden tapes for a while. A friend taped them for me, and a rotten jerk stole them. I got to know the songs and their catchy European riffs. And I admit, I really liked the cover artwork with Eddie. Over the years, as Triumph has faded and is usually skipped on my ipod, I'll still play out the few Maiden tunes I downloaded.
So it was just plain cool getting to follow Bruce Dickinson around the stage at Madison Square Garden for the large-screen projection. It was actually the first time I got to shoot a band I really liked - not just knew. So, in the grand scheme of things, it was cool.
Almost as cool was chatting up this really hot chick in the catering area who had the most awesome London accent and deep eyes. She was at a table, with a few of my fellow technicians, so over lunch I wound up talking to her for ten minutes before I discovered she was the opening act. Her name is Lauren and she is the daughter of Steve Harris, Iron Maiden's bassist.
She is a sweetheart person, one hell of a rock vocalist, and has the worlds greatest ass. I kid you not. I'm now a fan! God bless British Rockers and save the Queen.
