Doorways

Night crowed dark and damnable across the Gwalchmai campus as Dirk left the solemn confines of Cavalier Library. Jets from the nearby air-force base growled a foreboding baritone that set the rain an agonizing back-drop as the temperature continued to fall below 30. When there were no human minds to cloud him Dirk calmed to a dense inner harmony, a trait he had enjoyed since birth that left him the coolest of the cool under duress. He was at home in the empty places of the world or those that he could close his eyes in and remove the taint of man from with his mind. Disaster canvas. Time was spilling out of the clocks now and a vision was overcoming him.

As Dirk walked he left the road corporeal and aligned with a dream realm. He could see Gods, both of yesteryear and of now assembling in the human city named for one that was lost. They played childrens' games , but they were not giddy. The gods scrambled and tore at one another with gnashing of teeth and swinging of sword determined to oust any competitor. Dirk walked among them and sighed, for he knew...something...

The vision began to fade and Dirk was back on the sidewalk alert. He stopped and watched a frog primp on a tree stump.

"In my darkness I am whole. When I return it will be for light of purity."

He could not hear himself speak, but someone did and that someone now had reason to fear that change was about to loose itself on creation.

Returning to his senses, Dirk sang as he made for home, "...some people say a man is made out of mud..."
Darkness enveloped where he had tread.
