Ok here it is a new X Files flick ten years after 'Fight for the Future'. The story is set in West Virgina (and other parts of the North-Eastern US). There is a great feeling of nostalgia watching the film and seeing characters who have been absent from my viewing for a long time, that as an element held the most appeal for me. The story largely revolves around the relationship between Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and how it influences the investigation of a number of strange disappearances.
As always, the nuts and bolts. I give it an B- overall. The brake down is: B for special effects; the settings lent themselves well to the overall feel of the film. I give it an B- for dialogue & acting; this iteration of Scully seems a bit "the lady doth protest too much" for me, Mulder was well Mulder... 'nuff said? The plot was well 'ok', good for any crime drama but not really "X Files" enough in it's content e.g. it was too light on the Sci-fi end and felt more like a serial killer flick, I give it a B-/C+. The character development was average, I give it a B-. To those who aren't familiar with the series I think they'd be left with a sense of "WTF is up with this?" Well, that's at least a paraphrase of what my girlfriend said.
In conclusion, X-files I want to believe isn't a bad film but it's not an outstanding film either. Certainly worth the price of a matinee' for me, perhaps best left as a rental for those who are not so familiar with the series.
