What was worse was that she had lost Heine. He was somewhere else. Somewhere she didn't know. Somewhere in the fog.
And she was scared. There were only two things that she was good at. Waiting and running. Neither were effective in this situation with the mist shifting around her. Wings fluttered against her back, shifting to press closer.
The voice that followed the gunshots made things no better. D-Do people normally shoot before calling out? And the person sounded...a little bit frightening...Was it safe to respond? Would the stranger in the mist shoot again? She couldn't speak but making a sound might be too startling...
Nill didn't want to be shot at.
Wings rustle.
Maybe the sound would be a calm enough noise to allow safe passage to a sanctuary.
Don't hurt me.

She started to walk away, only stopping dead when Reanbell heard that wing rustle.
Her intense paranoia that was developing was starting to take over but she refrained from firing her gun again. It was a different sound than the silence given by shadows. Slowly, she approached from where she heard the noise through the fog, a mixture of concern and fear that she was doing the wrong thing by trying to seek out the source.
That's when she became close enough to almost bump into Nill, blinking before quietly asking, "Ah... are you... okay?" Was this the shadow she had fired her gun at? It would figure.
"Are you lost?" That would make two of them.

Lost.
Very lost.
And scared.
I can't find Heine.

"I'm lost, too. Let's help each other, okay? I won't let anything happen to you."

Mukuro wasn't expecting such an easy catch on his part, and for a moment he's half surprised, half amused, before the illusions wind further around Zephyr, moving to dig their metaphoric claws into him and wrapping him up nice and snug like a caterpillar in a cocoon. The trident held loosely in one hand, pointed away from him, he looks altogether unconcerned, if slightly rumpled.
The ground covered during Mukuro and Zephyr's little game of hide and seek, and then tag, and then all out brawling brings them within close vicinity of Reanbell and Nill, but he has yet to notice them, more pre-occupied by sustaining the illusions and subduing one rampaging newcomer.

Wouldn't that be nice?
The image left Zephyr with a sadistic grin of sorts, before the grip on his gun tightened.
It was going to take more than this to take Zephyr out. Not right now.

Not wanting to get Nill dragged into anything, she coaxed the girl to find a hiding spot before she herself approached.
"Zephyr?!"
God, he was still crazy, wasn't he. Completely over the top berserk and with each passing second she wished more and more that Vashyron was here (He'd know what to do, she wasn't going to be any use in this).
It wasn't until then that she took her eyes off her partner to look up and over at Mukuro, her voice showing her concern, obviously. He was doing something to Zephyr, wasn't he?
"What is going on!"

or that's what would have happened, if he hadn't paused in his tracks to turn back, looking over his shoulder at the source of a vaguely familiar voice. Before him, the vines twist and turn into snakes, large enough to keep a man constrained, coiling and hissing around- ah, what was it? Her partner.
The corner of his mouth tilts upward in a small smirk, and he tucks an errant strand of hair behind his ear, laughing.
"Have you come to collect your charge?"
This one has to be the babysitter, yeah?

With the coming of ash, Zephyr felt something-protection? It wasn't the fact that he had always been this strong, but rather, that he had been protected. The illusions are no exception, and Zephyr intended to make full use of it. Shooting at what was supposed to be a vine, a snake, whatever, Zephyr aimed his gun straight at Mukuro. Reanbell's voice allows him to pinpoint the point of intersection, and he's certain the source of these disappearing illusions (with more ash replacing its surroundings) somewhere within his shot.
"Cute."
That's sarcasm, by the way.

(The correct answer these days seems to be a resounding "yes".)
But getting shot at is more or less a normal occurrence in his life, and he'll take it with good grace, the sound of the gun going off prompting him to break the illusions, beasts and foliage disappearing as quickly as they came. In the next breath, the kanji 一 shifts into 四, yet even that proves to be not enough to grant him the speed he needs in this moment to dodge a bullet.
Even as he braces for impact, it never comes. Instead, a flurry of pink and red feathers obscures his view, accompanied by a loud squawk as his familiar takes the hit.
Talk about taking one for the team!! Mukuro spares one glance for the bird before nudging her to one side. Looks like it'll be flamingo for dinner, as soon as he finishes with this punk.
"I tire of this."
Time to finish things.

Did... did that bird just take a bullet for this man?
She turned to look at Zephyr now, voice somewhere along the lines of downright desperate (he was going to get himself killed), calling to him. "Zephyr! Stop this right now! What do you think you're doing?!"
Other than being crazy, she meant. She looked back towards Mukuro, pleading, "Please don't kill him." She wasn't even sure the man could, but she said it, anyway. In such a foreign place far away from home, it was possible someone had better luck than Zephyr in the face of death.
They'd been here so little time, she wasn't even aware of how death worked in Nuadoria. And even so, the last thing she wanted was to see Zephyr killed.

"I told you: I'm taking out some trash," he replied, looking past Mukuro and at Reanbell. Something at the back of his mind told him to run now, not necessarily for the sake of survival but for her, but there was a stubbornness that Zephyr couldn't break off-not while he was sane, and certainly not right now.
... maybe.

Three strangers-- though she had met one, Nill had never gotten a name -- all fighting for some unknown reason. It was best not to interfere. If she moved recklessly she might even end up getting shot. She had been lucky earlier, but luck was never a lengthy visitor.
However, it looked like they were at something like a standstill now. Nill emerges from her hiding spot around the corner of a building, the large snake following behind her feet. Her footsteps are as quiet as her voice, silent. She reaches the injured flamingo and tends to its wounds.
She glances at the fighters.
Done?

Death may hold little meaning here, but retribution is another thing entirely. An eye for an eye, after all.Plus, his abdominal area is beginning to hurt like hell, telling him just exactly where the bird was hit. It's not a problem, of course, not when it's something he can fix, but Mukuro isn't so good natured as to simply let Zephyr get away with it.
"Kill him?" A light, pleasant laugh, and he glances at Reanbell. "No, I'll do much worse than that."
But before he can clarify just what "much worse" is, there is an abrupt shift in the atmosphere, a ringing in his ears, and Mukuro recognises this for what it is, bracing himself--
plane shift.

All the more reason why he was the one caught most off-guard at the redness swallowing up the world beneath and above him. It's at that moment that Zephyr lets out a grunt, mind overcome with images, hallucinations, memories of the past (somewhere in the middle of everything he sees his hand reach out for a girl who wanted to take control of her own life)-before the vulnerability broke Mukuro's illusions, but in turn, Zephyr's mind as well.
Everything went black.
