Reno had collapsed before he could reach the gate. Whatever the fog was, it seemed to weigh him down until he couldn't go make himself go forward. He had thought he had seen a city in the distance, but as he'd moved closer it vanished into the haze. A new bout of nausea swept over him and he fell on his back to stop it from spreading. He groaned and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
This wasn't like any magic he'd been hit with before.
Wherever he was, it felt like a wasteland. He hadn't heard of Sephiroth returning again, or another Meteor... so what was going on?
He was still carrying his mag-rod, for whatever good it did him. Even if whoever had done this had the decency to show themselves, he wouldn't be able to put up much of a fight. The voices from the device he'd been dragging along had stopped. He was either out of range or the thing had broken. Either way, he couldn't hear them anymore.
Of all the ways he'd imagined it would end, he had never dreamed up this one.
