If it could be a color, then the fragrance of blood would a vivid red among the dull shade of browns and gold. It was a faint scent, subtle from distance, but nonetheless soft and inviting. It must be freshly spilt, Kaname thought. That would be why it was so noticeable. He unhurriedly came to a standstill; the wind had come from the direction of the cathedral. It would be safe to assume that the scent had come from a survivor. The blood wouldn’t tempt him, Kaname was sure, since he never acquired the taste for human blood. If it was indeed human, he mentally corrected.

It had been days since Kaname had been exposed to the smell; not since bringing those dogs from the Council to their fitting end. The clinical hunger was not a pressing issue. Kaname could last a few more days without feeding if he stretched his endurance thin, but with Yuuki also in this world, Kaname thought it probably wouldn’t come to that.

He continued walking towards the cathedral, but slowly began to diverge from his path to find the source of the blood. He kept his footfalls audible, not particularly wanting to startle any inhabitant of this world. As proved with the meteor, there were probably many who had strange, destructive abilities. Those with power often wielded it; Kaname himself was prepared for a counterattack if it came to that. Telekinesis was a useful ability.

It took only moments to find the source of that scent, fainter now but still prominent nonetheless. Kaname came upon a girl, hair as red as the colour that had been in his imagination earlier.

“Are you hurt?” he ventured to ask, voice deep and smooth.
