It was supposed to be a quick stop at the bank to deposit her paycheck before her shift at the precinct. Five, ten minutes tops. But as she stood at the kiosk in the corner filling out her deposit slip, a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach caused her to look up.
There were five men stationed around the building attending to their own business, but upon closer inspection it came to her attention that they all kept nodding and making eye contact. This was not looking good.
Slipping her hand discreetly into the pocket of her jeans, Anna pulled out her Blackberry and carefully planted it under the kiosk and activated her Bluetooth, dialing the first number that came to mind.
"Anna! What up?"
Ducking her head to hide behind her hair, she lowered her voice and kept pretending to scratch down information on her deposit slip. "Adam, I need you to shut up and do exactly what I tell you. Is that clear?"
Leaning back in his chair, Adam frowned and licked his lips. "What's going on?"
"Adam."
"Y-yeah, got it."
"I need eyes on the Chase Bank in Midtown near 5th Ave and 43rd St. I don't care if you have to hack the security feed inside the bank, do it. Whatever you do, don't speak to me. If you hear anything suspicious, go get Mac. Do you understand?"
Sliding over to his computer, he began typing away furiously at his keyboard, tensing up as he felt his pulse spike. "Anna, what's going on?"
"Adam. I may have to ditch my Bluetooth if something goes down and if they hear you talkin' to me, people could get hurt. Do. You. Understand."
Gulping, he nodded. "Yes."
Before she could respond, the bank erupted into a symphony of gunfire and terrified screams.
"Everyone get down on the floor, now! Slide all your cellphones over here now and if anyone moves, people die!"
Anna held her hands up and slowly laid down on the floor, all the while keeping careful watch over the men. Turning her head at an angle to allow her best access to Adam without getting caught, she spoke as quietly as she could. "Five men. Two semi-automatic weapons. One sawed-off shotgun, two pistols. Shot both security guards. Tell Mac no visible police presence outside or people will die."
Two of the men began to round up all the employees behind the counter, while a third duct-taped all their hands and feet, putting tape over the mouth of a particularly hysterical teller before turning to address their hostages. "Listen up, people! If we see any cops outside, people will die! Starting with women and children! If anyone tries anything, they die. No talking! No moving! No playing the hero!"
"At least two dead. Approximately thirty hostages that I can--"
"Hey!"
"Shit..." Anna cursed silently as she swallowed hard and tried to pry out her Bluetooth without using her hands as one of the armed men walked over to her and pointed his gun at her head.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing? Are you talkin' to someone? Huh?!"
As soon as he heard one of the robbers talking to Anna, Adam jumped out of his chair and bolted out of his station. Knocking down several techs in the process, he hit the stairs running, determined to get to Mac's office before things got worse.
Deciding this was her best chance to get rid of her Bluetooth, she curled up into a ball, slipping the device into her hand and pretended to cry. When the robber leaned over and grabbed her by the arm, she tucked her head in and dropped the device to the floor, sliding it with her foot to the edge of her kiosk and out of sight. "...Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name..." Anna rasped as the man shook her and eventually threw her back to the floor.
"Shut up, bitch or you're next!"
"Dude! We got a regular hero over here!" The man with the shotgun shouted as he punched a teenage boy whom they caught trying to text his mom. "Weren't you listening, you little fucker? Anyone who tries to be a hero dies."
"P-please, I'm- I'm sorry!" The kid sobbed, backing into a corner and looking around desperately for help.
"Aww, he's sorry. Too bad." The man who appeared to be the leader of the group raised his semi-automatic weapon and took aim.
But at this point, they had underestimated the crying, praying woman from before. "Don't even think about it, you incompetent son of a bitch."
Bursting through the door to Mac's office, Adam was pretty sure if this wasn't an emergency, Mac would kill him for interrupting his meeting with Danny. "Mac! It's- it's! Guns! Bank! Two dead! Anna!" Panting, he nearly fell over as he put his cell on speakerphone.
"NYPD, asshole. Let the kid go." In the fray, Anna had thrown her coat to the ground to reveal her badge on her hip and her standard-issue glock in hand. The safety was off and she was ready for war.
"Well, would you look at that! The whiny little bitch on the floor is a cop! And she thinks she can stop us with her big shiny badge." The men erupted into laughter and the next thing anyone heard was the tap tap tap of gunfire.
"ANNA!" Adam screamed, nearly dropping his phone in the process.
