"What's his name?"

"Eva, we were aimin' for subtlety." Ryan groaned, hand going to his forehead as he passed his older sister a cup of cider and perched on the arm rest of the couch.

In the meantime, Eva had parked herself right next to Anna, gawking at her short hair and Devil's Trap tattoo in awe. Somehow - somehow her mother wrangled the B word out of her and now apparently it was time for a family moment. Anna liked to call this cozy little event 'the gauntlet' because it was nothing but a series of hops, skips, and jumps in an attempt to successfully dodge the barrage of probing and personal jabs being thrust upon her by her - "loving" - family.

"I hate you all."

A loud gasp. "Oh. My. God. No. No!" Had Eva jumped any higher, she'd have hit her head on the ceiling - but at this point? Anna would've welcomed the potential concussion. "It's not that Dean Winchester guy."

Sighing in defeat, she got off the couch and headed toward her makeshift bedroom. "Not a word. Any of you."

"The guy's like a total womanizer! I just don't get what ya see'n him!" Eva yelled out as Anna closed the door behind her and sunk back on the couch.

"Well, that went about as well as your 'talk' with Flack after he broke it off with her." Ryan pointed out wryly, nose wrinkling slightly in disdain. "You really gotta learn when to keep your nose outta everyone's business, Eva."

Pouting, the younger brunette looked to Adriana for sympathy, but her mother just shook her head. "Your brother is right, bambina. Anna has changed since she left, but look at her. She is happier than she was here - even before her relationship with Don. Let her have this without trying to break it into pieces to be looked at under a microscope and evaluated."

"Points for the metaphor, mom." Ryan interjected with a chuckle. "Point being - don't question him or it. Anna does enough of that herself. She doesn't need help."

Ryan's coming to my defense? Hell has apparently frozen over. First Dean, now my brother? This will go down in the books as the first Christmas we haven't fought since before the divorce. Anna thought to herself, smiling softly and sinking to the floor with her back against the wall.

"If only you knew what I see, Eva. If only you knew. His eyes, his lips, his smile, his courage and reckless tendencies... I even like the way he makes me want to punch him for being an idiot." Tilting her head back, she chuckled. "But no matter how angry he makes me, I always come back to him. I always go... home."

That last word hit her with the force of a speeding freight train and everything seemed to fall into place. This self-imposed mission of hers - avenging Beretti's death - this wasn't her reason for (literally) fighting heaven and hell with the Winchester boys. All these months of tagging along - laughing, crying, hitting Dean - it was about something else. It was about feeling like she belonged. New York City, her mother's tiny Queens apartment, her now-adult siblings, the NYPD - it wasn't home. It was never truly home.

Home was in the backseat of a 1967 Chevy Impala, rocking out to 80's hair bands, and listening to the Winchester brothers argue about an I-Pod jack Sam installed while Dean was in Hell. And suddenly - she felt homesick.
